A stray dog in Queens was sniffing around a still-under-construction Citi (or US Taxpayer) Field for several days before animal control officers were sent out Wednesday to rescue her.

Turns out, the dog has better speed and range than Carlos Beltran.

From the story in the Associated Press,

New York City Animal Care and Control spokesman Mike Pastore said, "She was around home plate, ran up the first base line and ducked into the stands."

Animal control officers eventually caught up to her, calmed her down, and took her back to the agency's shelter in Manhattan (though I heard she was asked to pony up money for the toll). She is expected to be adopted by Saturday.

The Jamaican sprinter set the world record Saturday night with a time of 9.72 seconds at the Reebok Grand Prix, .02 seconds faster than the old mark held by his countryman, Asafa Powell. The amazing thing is that Bolt has made no secret of the fact that he sees himself as a 200m specialist. Earlier in the week he was still undecided if he would even enter the 100m Jamaican Olympic trials.

However, after becoming the fastest man on the planet he confirmed he would now double up in Beijing.

In writing this story, I was left to wonder where they hype has gone from the world of track and field. I remember back in 1992, Reebok set out to boost interest in their Track and Field shoes by televising short advertisements capitalizing on a friendly rivalry between two decathletes destined for the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona. They ran frequent ads showcasing the Dan and Dave phenomenon, hyping up the inevitable matchup of the two American greats.

The whole deal fell apart when Dan O'Brien failed to qualify. To most it didn't matter who actually won the vents, but the fact it was an air of electricity around the sport that had been vacant for some time.

I kind of miss those times, even if they don't live up to the hype.
