Playing a Different Kind of Field

Seriously I need someone to explain this to me. Michael Vick goes to jail for almost two years for dog fighting, but Matt Jones was caught sniffing cocaine in his car red handed and got a traffic ticket. On top of that it took the NFL what seemed to be 47 years to suspend him for the last three games of the year but when any other player in the league was even caught jaywalking they were hit with a suspension immediately.

Also where was the media coverage? Why wasn't anyone hounding Matt Jones like they were Pacman Jones? If anything the media just seemed to dismiss it. It was a bigger story when Super Bowl MVP Santanio Holmes was caught with a blunt than Jones snorting cocaine like he was Tony Montana nephew.

Read any label on over-the-counter medicine or listen to commercials for drugs for depression or cholesterol and you will hear the so-called side effects (you know, loss of appetite, hair loss, loss of libido, kleptomania, penile disfigurement, etc.).

If you watch someone on TV, the station you are watching can also issue a public warning to prohibit you from watching too long.

Does this sound ludicrous? Not if you ask anyone watching the Super Bowl in the Detroit metropolitan area. Seriously.

With news that Reggie Bush had microfracture surgery on his knee I thought this would be a good time to revisit the 2006 NFL Draft. The reason being is I said back then I would give it three years before I made firm commitments on the five major players from that draft. There has been much debate over Reggie Bush, Mario Williams, Vince Young, Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler so it is time to put some things to rest.

1- Mario Williams

I thought the Texans made a huge mistake not drafting Reggie Bush and taking Williams who I figured would be a decent, but not dominating defensive end. Williams has turned out to be a dominating player worthy of his #1 Pick status, but the Texans though haven't been very successful on the field. The question begs would they have been a better team with Bush than Williams? Probably not, so in hindsight from a pure performance issue it was the right pick even if it hasn't translated to playoff appearances.

2- Jay Cutler

I was on record saying that he would be a colossal bust and would be the worst out of the three main quarterbacks taken. A couple of things are obvious now. First he is the best out of the three. He still has a lot of flaws, but you can see the potential of a franchise Quarterback. He isn't there yet, but he is on the right path. The next coach that Denver selects will be critical in his development. At worst he becomes a Boomer Esiason type at best a Jim Kelly. Either way it was an excellent choice for the Broncos.

3- Reggie Bush

Cowardly Lions' Primed for 0-16 Season?

|

lionsinside.jpg

Ok so this pains me as a native Detroiter and Michigander more than anyone could possibly know. Regardless of my nonchalant behavior toward the subject and my many quips about the Lions being on time out with me, I still feel sorry for the winless bums. If having one of the highest unemployment rates, a rapidly sinking automotive industry, a scandalous jailbird ex-mayor, and young people fleeing the city faster than the Israelites exodus from Egypt wasn't enough, we have a sorry excuse of football team totally inept from winning against even the Houston Texans!!! How much can a girl take?

The situation is beyond bleak and unlike the Big Three pleading "Please sir, can I have some more" to the federal government, no amount of goodwill from NFL commissioner Robert Goodell will sway Detroit from the path of 0-16 except a good old fashioned WIN!!! Already 0-10, the Lions are poised to join the ranks of the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the only team in NFL history to NOT WIN a regular season game. That's almost as impossible as staying undefeated the whole season, if not more so.

"We're almost paralyzed here," says Tom Wilson, president of the Detroit Pistons before Sunday's loss to the Carolina Panthers added insult to injury. "Everybody is scared in this city. They're 0-9 and, if after Sunday's game they're 0-10, they'll have the entire front page of the newspaper, in a town with the Stanley Cup champions ..."

As we already know I am right 99.9% of the time (just kidding), but the one thing that all the writers of BlackSportsOnline do is admit when they were wrong and seeing that the NFL season is coming down the stretch I think it is safe to talk about a few things I have been wrong about.

1- Matt Ryan

I was definitely way off with this one. I thought there was no way shape, form or fashion that Ryan of the 19 INTs in his senior season at Boston College would be a good quarterback in the NFL. Lets be honest I thought he was going to be garbage and I thought the Falcons had a solid chance of winning 2 or 3 games.
Having the NFL Sunday Ticket Package on the NFL (a must have for any true NFL Fan) I have watched every single one of Ryan's games and he is the real deal. I would venture to say he is better than 75% of the QBs in the NFL. He has shown skills that 4 or 5 year veterans have not shown. I was wrong about this kid.

2- Bill Parcells and The Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins went 1-15 last year, so I figured there would be some improvement, but nothing like this. I thought Bill Parcells was still living in 1988 not 2008 and his way of thinking would just plunge the Dolphins in a bigger hole.
But then the Dolphins got a real QB in Chad Pennington and then got creative. Out of all the teams I would have expected to come out with the "Wildcat" the Dolphins would have been way down on the list. But it is working and they are fighting for a Wildcard spot.

matt-stupidity-millen.jpg

Reports are coming in that Matt Millen is leaving his position as GM of the Detroit Lions. This would similar to a pilot resigning after he has crashed five planes. Meaning yes it is a good thing that he is gone, but it is about four years to late. If it wasn't for the Al "The Crypt Keeper" Davis turning the Raiders into a circus the Lions would get more attention as one of the worse franchises in the NFL.

One stat that sums up the Millen era:

The Lions are 8-50 in there last 58 road games.

Let me repeat that the Lions are 8-50 in there last 58 road games.

The fact that he has lasted as long as he has explains why the Lions are garbage. They can't blame Mike Martz for getting behind 21-0, 21-0 & 21-3 in their first three games of the season. That is a poorly coach and organized team. While Millen isn't entirely to blame he brought in all the players and the coach so a lot of blood is on his hands.

I would congratulate the Lions on doing the right thing, but since it took them so long it proves that they have no idea how to run a professional organization. No wonder Barry retired early.

Every once awhile I am wrong it doesn't happen often but when it does I have no problem manning up and telling you. I was 100% sure that Matt Leinart would end up being a better quarterback that both Vince Young and Jay Cutler who were all drafted in the same draft class.

I was a little off on that one while Young has not been great he has lead he team to the playoffs. Cutler has at least shown flashes of being a good QB. Leinart has been a flat out bust. The nail in the coffin was losing his starting job to 400 year old Kurt Warner after being handed the starting job in mini-camp.

It appears that Leinart is heading the way of David Carr and Alex Smith. At least he has those ballroom dancing classes to fall back on.

Reggie Bush you are on the clock!!!

Who knew Matt Jones "who?" Matt Jones had a little Scarface in him.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones faces a felony drug charge in his former college town after police say he was inside a car cutting up cocaine with a credit card.

The 25-year-old Jones and two others were arrested early Thursday. A police report said officers approached the car and an officer drew his handgun after Jones did not immediately show his hands.

Police said they searched the vehicle and found a plastic bag filled with a white substance that tested positive for cocaine and a jar with possible marijuana residue.
Jared Hicks and Benjamin Cook were also arrested on misdemeanor drug charges.
Jones was released from the Washington County jail on $2,500 bond. His arraignment on a charge of felony possession of a controlled substance was set for Aug. 11, two days after Jacksonville's preseason opener against Atlanta.

Police said 6 grams of cocaine was found. The threshold for potential charges of possession with intent to deliver is 1 gram. However, prosecutor John Threet said there is no evidence that Jones intended to deal the drug.

Now coming Matt don't you know the 1st rule of drug dealing:

"Don't get high off your own supply"

I thought the NFL was supposedly cracking down on bad behavior is it me or does it seem to be increasing?

Maybe now we can all stop talking about spygate. Matt Walsh turned over tapes to the NFL which, in essence, confirmed, what we already knew, that the Patriots are cheaters. That was established a long time ago. So this isn't news.

He didn't have the tape of the infamous Super Bowl walk through that the Boston Herald claims to exist. So in reality, this is much to do about nothing. The football gods have already punished the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick more than Roger Goddell ever could. How else could you explain an 18-0 team getting beat in the Super Bowl? If you don't believe in fate and karma you should now. So please no more spygate talk. It is a dead issue.

When Matt Leinart stayed for his senior year at USC, most applauded him for staying in school to hone his football skills and further his education. However, in reality, the only skills he was honing were his Hugh Hefner skills.

So why are the Cardinals surprised that pictures exist like these of Leinart having a good time with some co-eds? If he were a pimp in college, what makes you think he wouldn't be a pimp in the pros?

Leinart has a lot of work to do to become a good NFL Quarterback, but calm down Arizona Cardinals fans and coaches there isn't anything unusual about this except for the fact that it was caught on camera. There are plenty of drunken pictures of Eli Manning and Big Ben and the last time I checked they were both sporting Super Bowl rings. Hanging out with the ladies isn't a precursor to being a NFL bust if anything for Quarterbacks it seems to lead to success, so if I was the Cardinals I would send a few more ladies from the "University of Arizona" over to Leinart's house maybe then they can make it to the playoffs.
