Michael Vick: NFL or UFL?

|

mike-vick.jpeg
As training camp gets closer and closer to starting in the NFL there is a question that's been on my mind. The question is whether Michael Vick will be re-instated back into the NFL and if so will he be picked up by any teams. Despite all the PR moves by most teams saying they have absolutely no interesting Vick, I highly doubt that he'd last very long on the market if he were to be re-instated in time for some team's training camp. Recently on profootballtalk.com there have been a few posts suggesting that Vick (along with Plaxico Burress) will not be re-instated for the 2009 NFL season. Is the NFL commish riding on a moral high horse or doe he have a legitimate reason for not wanting to re-instate them? Will their shelving teach a lesson to anyone else in the league? I think that the UFL would be smart to grab Vick should the NFL snub him this year.

I don't really have anything profound to say. I am as shocked as everyone else. It sports we talk about the difference between "great" players and "legendary" players. MJ was MJ way before Michael Jordan was MJ.

My favorite Michael Jackson song of all time.

"Rock With You"

Kobe MJ.jpg

With Kobe winning his fourth championship, where does he rank among the all-time greats? There have many many great shooting guards such as Michael Jordan, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Clyde Drexler, etc. When comparing Kobe to the best shooting guards in NBA history, Kobe Bryant is arguably the best shooting guard of all-time.

dontestallworth.jpg

Let me start by saying I have no beef with Donte Stallworth or his legal team. His attorneys did what they were paid to do. They got him the best deal possible which will keep his NFL career intact. My problem is with our justice system and how it seems their priorities are mixed up.

I have an assignment for you. Go to any one of your friends who don't know anything about the NFL and never heard of Michael Vick or Donte Stallworth (it might be an old person, but do you best). Present them with the following scenarios.

kobe-jordan.jpg

Yesterday we compared Lebron James plight to a very young Michael Jordan. Today we are going to compare the plight of Kobe Bryant to an older Michael Jordan.

Legendary athletes in any sport when their physical skills start to erode their mental skills peak. When they no longer have the ability to physically dominate they get by simply on their athletic IQ.

Fans in general, especially if they are in love with the player don't like to acknowledge physical slippage. To the train eye though it should be obvious.

If you have been engaged in the Kobe vs. Lebron debate one thing should be clear, Lebron is a physical monster right now. This brings us to Darth Kobe.

One of the first sports books I ever read was "The Jordan Rules" by Stan Smith. One of the main features of the book was a philosophy by Detroit Pistons head coach Chuck Daly (RIP) on the best way to defend Michael Jordan.

The interesting thing was Daly knew you couldn't totally stop Jordan, but the plan was to force him to play 1 on 5 and to beat his brains in for the entire series.

Fast forward to 2009 and you are Lebron James. You have your "Scottie Pippen" Mo Williams not even playing to a Craig Hodges level (what was up with Mo almost crying after the game, dude is weird). Your big men are either statues (Big Z) or offensively challenged (Side Show Bob). You have a forward that is 100 years old (Joe Smith) and another one that is Wally Freakin Szerbiak for goodness sake. It is truly amazing (do not play that Kanye West song again!!!) that Lebron has kept this series with the Magic as close as it is.

michael-vick-photo.jpg

That has been the question seemingly talked about 24 hours a day on ESPN since Michael Vick left prison (well they did interrupt briefly to talk about Lebron vs. Kobe in the NBA finals). The main question that keeps being asked is does he deserve the right to play? Does a man who has repaid his debt to society really need to beg for a chance to get a job doing what he does best?

A number of commentators and fans have said playing in the NFL is a privilege not a right. And I ask them is their job at ESPN a privilege. Did someone just hand them their job at ESPN or did the everyday person working at an office just get handed their job. No, most people had to work and hone their skills to get to the job they have now. Of course there are some industries where nepotism and who you know may play a role in you getting a job, I'm thinking specifically of coaching. But no top athlete is just given their position in the pros. I know people don't like to think of playing sports as a job, but it is. They spend a couple hours a day working out, a couple hours a day practicing, a couple of hours watching film. Yes, it is something we all did when we were young and we constantly say we would do for free. But the reality is people don't play professional sports for free. They play for millions of dollars, and we all support that by going to games, watching on TV, by buying tickets, by buying jerseys and hats. So no playing sports isn't a privilege in itself. Anybody who has a great job or life or family can say they're privileged. But in reality in order to get to that point work had to be put in to get to that point.

In classic American fashion it appears many in our society have realized what I have been saying for the last two years:

NO ONE SHOULD GET TWO YEARS IN JAIL FOR DOG FIGHTING

Maybe when society sees a multiple time felony who was caught red handed buying automatic weapons get two months in jail (See T.I.) or reads about a man shooting someone in the leg three times but gets six years probation and allowed to graduate for the same school he shot the person at (see: Morehouse shooting) it realize that their judgment of Vick was a bit harsh.

Is a Michael Vick a liar, an idiot and a cruel individual to animals?

If you are interested in online poker or other casino games, this is the site for you.

michaelvick_about.jpg

If I was the "Dog Whisperer" I would definitely consider it. it is better than working $10 an hour construction and I sure a quarter of a million would feel good in his pocket right now.

Here is the official press release:

michaelvick.jpgSure we all think Favre will come back to the Vikings and I'm sure there will be endless coverage over it. However Favre has his work cut out for him because there's Michael Vick's imminent release from prison. According to a press release,

ESPN has released the details about who they are sending and where. Three reporters will be spread out from Leavenworth, Kan, to Hampton, Va, and Atlanta, and the network will air specials throughout the day. There will even be a one hour special that Tuesday. Via ESPN PR....

aamir, vick.jpg

That title is not wrong. Michael VIck indeed, is in discussions with PETA to be the main spokesman for their upcoming campaign to stop dog fighting.

But to make sure Vick isn't just doing this to fix his image and isn't genuine about it, the folks at PETA want him to take some psychological exams and an anti-social personality disorder test. PETA has always been known to do some pretty crazy campaigns (like throwing animal blood on people who wear fur), but using VIck? This could be interesting. They also asked Vick to take an evaluation entitled "Developing Empathy for Animals," a questionnaire that allows them to see your position on animals. PETA being the organization that they are...posted VIck's comments.

Let's review.

Michael Vick is being paid $600,000 to appear in a documentary. There is also word that he wrote a book while he was in jail and he's looking for a publishing deal. There are those who will be upset that he's looking to bank on his misfortunes. Those people need to shut up, because it's not like PETA and the ASPCA didn't make a truckload of money off of him already.

Michael Vick is millions of dollars in debt, about to be released from jail, and resigned to working a $10 an hour construction job (cheap promotion for the company, because they're not putting a backhoe in his hands) because there's no guarantee that he'll be let back in the NFL. Roger Goodell said that Vick is "going to have to demonstrate to the larger community -- not just to the NFL community and to me -- that he has remorse for what he did and that he recognizes mistakes that he made," which is code for "I want to see this [expletive deleted] dance for the American public," because public admittance and jail time just isn't demonstration enough.

nicole_murphy_michael.jpg

Michael Strahan. Gap-toothed hero of Superbowl XLI turned crazed girlfriend stalker and covert opt for 'Cheaters'? According to the New York Post, Strahan isn't just trained sacks, he has other tricks in his playbook, namely tracking devices and spy cams. Reportedly the ex-Giants defensive end planted a tracking device in the SUV of his main squeeze, model Nicole (Eddie Murphy's ex-wife) Murphy, not once but TWICE, upon suspecting her of cheating on him.

Sources say Nicole Murphy was carrying on a secret "love affair" for almost a whole year with Universal Records A&R executive, Demetrius Spencer, rendezvousing on Caribbean and Mexican exotic getaways disguised as business trips and sharing mushy emails filled with undying love for each other. Funny how that is for a relationship that was quoted as built on communication and shared interests.

While competing in a debate at Sports2Debate.com one of the the topics was who were the most "clutch" athletes off all time. I thought you would be interested in my list.

1- Michael Jordan

You can sum up MJ's clutch skills in two possessions. 1998 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz everyone remembers the shot over Byron Russell that was a serial killer putting a dagger in the heart, but what I remember more was the steal of Karl Malone to get Jordan in position to make that shot. It is the little things that are the difference between a great player (see: Karl Malone) and a legendary players (see: Michael Jordan).

Being clutch is always about hitting the game winning shot. It is about making all the plays to get you in position to make that shot. No one was better than that than Michael Jordan. There has never been a better "serial killer" in the history of sports.

2- Joe Montana

Being clutch is also about being calm. So it is no wonder Montana got the name "Joe Cool". The famous story of him kidding about John Candy being in the stands as he prepared to take the 49ers down the field for the winning score in the Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals is legendary.

The best players never get caught up in the moment they embrace it while others run from it. Montana was a classic case of the QB you want to be under center. You want your best players to play their best in the biggest games and that is the Super Bowl and there was no one better that Montana in those pressure moments.

aamir, lebron6.jpg

When Lebron James came into the league, he was immediately thrown nearly unrealistic expectations, and given the title "King." He was to be the heir to the new generation of the NBA, leading the league to never-seen before heights and carrying the league on his shoulders and evolve into what many still believe to this day...the best player to ever play the game. They were saying this in high school. They would've said it in college. Lebron went number one in the 2003 NBA Draft, and went on to surpass all expectations given to him in his first year, showing that King James truly does have the potential to be the best player to ever play this game.

But how did it all start? Where did Lebron get his motivation and drive from, that he became such a magnificent force? Lebron considers getting facets of his game from many players, from Julius Erving to George Gervin to Magic Johnson. But one player he notes, as every other young player growing up will tell you, he credits Michael Jordan.

Lebron went with the two-three citing Jordan as his hero. As a freshman, James actually wore #32, but changed to #23 his sophomore year, and the rest is...well it's not history. it's current. We have seen James transcend himself into the spotlight as the most marketable player in the NBA. He is among in the constant debate of whether or not he is the best player in the NBA. At age 24, it's definitely scary to see how high his game will go as he matures.

But the question is... is Lebron living in Michael Jordan's shadow? And is it time to change that?

To start the NBA All-Star weekend in fashion this weekend, the Jordan brand will be showcasing their next 60 second commercial spot for the "Become Legendary" series.

It features Rip Hamilton, Carmelo Anthony, Joe Johnson and Chris Paul.

Check it out. It's unreal. It also features Jordan's new sneakers, the Jordan 2009. See if you can spot it. For pics of the Jordan 2009, see an older post on my blog. This has got to be one of my favorite Jordan commercials in this series that doesn't feature Jordan himself.

In an unexpected fashion, Michael Jordan had an interview yesterday with a number of reporters, the Associated Press reports. On the conference call, Jordan admitted his mistakes of drafting Kwame Brown number 1 in Washington and has conceded that Adam Morrision too - his second major lottery draft choice - has been a failed project. Accepting fault, he emphasized that there are still moves he will be making to allow the Charlotte franchise to compete long term.

"I think we've grown from it. I've grown from it and hopefully down the road when you make a choice, you try to make a better choice. People are going to point out the mistakes," Jordan said from Chicago, pointing out that rookie D.J. Augustin has gotten very little praise while having a great first year. "Very rarely do they point out the successes. I understand that. It's part of the game."

In December, Jordan sent leading-scorer Jason Richardson and forward Jared Dudley to Phoenix for Raja Bell, Boris Diaw and Sean Singletary. Only a month later, Charlotte sent sharp shooter Matt Carroll and center, Ryan Hollins to Dallas for the 7-foot DeSagana Diop. In a third trade this season, project Adam Morrison and guard Shannon Brown were traded to the Lakers for Vladimir Radmanovic. There are many reports that both Sean May and Raymond Felton will be traded before the deadline. While Felton is having a terrific year, sources around the league expect that Felton's price this off-season will be too high for the Bobcats to pay.

The trading deadline is next Thursday, Feb. 19.

aamir, lakerbobcat trade.jpg

On the eve of all the Phoenix Suns trade talk, the first trade comes from the Charlotte Bobcats and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers traded forward Vladimir Radmanovic for seldom used forwards, Adam Morrison and Shannon Brown of the Charlotte Bobcats.

The moment I heard of this trade, I didn't think about the unexpected move by the Lakers, but I immediately thought of Bobcat part-owner Michael Jordan. We all know who he is as a player, but this trade shows another failed project by Jordan, who was heavily criticized for taking Kwame Brown in Washington with the first pick in the 2001 Draft. In the 2006 draft, Jordan selected Adam Morrison with the 3rd pick over most notably, Brandon Roy, Rudy Gay and Randy Foye who are all now playing very good basketball for their respective teams. With the Bobcats most likely being in the lottery this year, one has to wonder what type of move Jordan will make this off-season.

The deal does make a little sense for the Lakers, however, who will get some cap relief after next season but does not make the number one team in the West any better just yet. Morrision, like Radmanovic has been an inconsistent shooter, and Shannon Brown has not gotten enough playing time until recently due to injuries to have any significant impact, but has shown sparks of defensive intensity, something the Lakers truly lack. As for the Bobcats, the bottom end of the Eastern Conference team will add not only a shooter, but a little more size to their front court.

Maybe both shooters needed a change of scenery? Or Maybe this is the only beginning of a series of trades for the Lakers before the deadline...only time will well.

michael-phelps-smoking-bong.jpg

So Michael Phelps likes to smoke that "Ricky Williams" what is the big deal? It is weed, if it was crack or cocaine that would be one thing, but it is weed and before you go on your "Rob must be a pot head" tangent let me say that I am not a smoker. I mean I have smoked before but that was because of this girl and a bet that involved some Victoria Secret lingerie and a video camera but I digress. The point I am making is this there is a lot more things to worry about in this world than Michael Phelps hitting the bong.

I understand he is a role model and what not, but I will tell parents this if the worst thing you catch your kids doing is puffing the sticky icky consider yourself blessed because it could be worse. Stop using athletes as role models; you don't want your kid to hit the bong talk to them about drugs. I am on record stating that alcohol is much more dangerous than weed and anyone can buy beer even McLovin.

Do 49ers Want Michael Vick?

|

Just reading the sports news today, and I see the San Francisco 49ers interviewed Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson Friday morning for their open offensive coordinator position. You would think that's not a big deal, until you start connecting dots, and there are plenty.

In honor of our new President our good friends at Layupdrill.com dropped their 44 Greatest Players in NBA History. I think you can guess who is #1, but check out the rest of the list you might be surprised:

*UPDATE*

This is a list consisting of the greatest players that Layupdrill.com have seen in their lifetime. Since they aren't as old as Greg Oden (I am soooooo funny) it only includes players from the last 25 years.

THE 44 GREATEST NBA PLAYERS PRESENTED BY LAYUPDRILL.COM

aamir, ai and rip.jpgDetroit Pistons starting shooting guard, Richard Hamilton returned from a nagging injury this week their game on Wednesday against the Indiana Pacers. He had a sub-par game, going 4/13 in thirty minutes, ending up with 9 points. It's a good thing starting shooting guard for the Detroit Pistons; Allen Iverson started and scored 23 on 19 shots.

See anything wrong with that?

The Pistons started Rasheed Wallace at center, putting Tayshaun Prince and Rip Hamilton at forwards and Rodney Stuckey and AI in the backcourt. The Pacers are no powerhouse, but a front court of Danny Granger, Troy Murphy and Jeff Foster outrebounded and outscored the Detroit Pistons trio.

With such a small line up, coach Michael Curry will be writing his own ending as the Detroit Pistons head coach, as it will prove to be the decline of the Detroit Pistons. He has a choice to make... he has to decide whether to bring Rip or AI off the bench.

*I'd love to hear your comments on this*

The first thing that comes to mind while watching this video is that whoever is Sapp's tailor should be getting paid double for being able to get him into those suits on the NFL Network because he could have definitely used the Bowflex for Christmas. Beyond that they seem to be having a little too much fun while onlookers just seem to be in shocked that these two stars are flopping around like twelve year olds. I thought this was South Beach where are the hot chicks? I see a few in the background, but the cameraman "Pimp Focus" was not strong.

Wouldn't this video have been 100x no 1000x better if instead of Sapp, Megan Fox was in the pool? I am just saying and yes that was just an excuse to post this picture of Megan Fox.

Now that we've said goodbye to the end of an era of mediocrity known as the Bush era and ushered in the new, you can't help but look back at the some of the greatest sports moments of 2008. Here's some that made you laugh, cry or just stare dumbfounded in disbelief. Yea Litall touched on this but as usual, but after much debating, here are MY top picks for best sports stories. Let the arguments begin............

TOP 8 SPORTS MOMENTS OF 2008

8.) Nadal Ends Federer's Reign At Wimbledon
menswimbledon.jpg
Ok so I'll bite. Now that I've seen video clips, I've decided to kick off my second annual Top Sports Moments list with the history in the making match up between men's tennis
greats Rafeal Nadal and Roger Federer. The grueling five match showdown complete with rain delays was a testament to Nadal's toughness and tenacity and marked the end of Federer's five year reign, as Nadal was crowned Wimbledon champion.

7.)Rays Almost Sting Phillies In World Series
devilrays.jpg
To the victor goes the spoils they say and while the Phillies have been named as the 2008 World Series Champions, the Rays fairytale journey into the World Series contention should definitely NOT go without notice. Just thinking about a team with a 200-1 shot at appearing in the World Series go from worst to first, beating out heavyweights New York and Boston is enough to place this moment in the Top 8 Sports Moments of 2008.

6.) Old Time Rivalry Renewed:Celtics vs Lakers
lakersvsceltics.jpg
There's something about reliving the glory days when the NBA Finals was a clash of the Titans between two juggernauts, one from the East and one from the West. Ask anyone about the Celtics vs Lakers rivalry and the names Magic vs Bird, Russell vs come to mind. During the 2008 Finals, David Stern, the media and old school fans got their wish as Kobe led Lakers faced off against the Big 3 of the Celtics composed of K.G., Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. Despite the victory being favored to go to the Lakers, the defensive prowess of the Celtics proved to be too much for the Lakers and the Celtics went on to win the series in 6 games.

What is this the Guitar Hero plague? First its David Cook and David Archuleta and then unforgettably Heidi Klum OTHER Guitar Hero Commercial. Yea yea I know! Not another commercial post but a girl has to show off her humorous side. Last time I checked a sense of humor is sexy in a woman or so I've been told *smile

This may be "Risky Business" but Kobe rocking it out in boxer shorts along with A-Rod and Phelps + Tony Hawk in a dufus helmet and toy drums on a skateboard= MAD funny! lmao I couldn't resist this one

Wow that was a hell of a game. You have to give the Longhorns credit for fighting back but the Red Raiders dominated most of the game. Check out the highlights and Mr. Crabtree showing why he is going to be a Top 5 Pick in next years NFL Draft.

Are you kidding me? Seriously how far can one man fall? Still can't believe you can get two years for dog fighting and Patriots lineman Nick Kazur was caught with 202 OxyContin pills and get a slap on the wrist but I digress. It is hard to feel bad for the "Dog Whisperer", but if he doesn't come out of prison a change man there will be no hope for him. Here are the details of the auction.

Items related to Vick's child sold to pay his bills

The contents of a storage unit belonging to Michael Vick, which included baby items, were sold after the imprisoned Falcons quarterback failed to pay his bill, according to a Virginia television station.

WTKR Channel 3 reported Tuesday that employees at the Iron Bound Mini Storage in Williamsburg informed Edward Howard that he had bid on a unit rented to Vick.

Inside boxes, Howard found pictures of Vick and his son. He also found a football signed by Vick to the child. Howard told the station that other boxes were packed with baby clothes, baby furniture and other items that he believes are memories of Vick's first-born boy.

Vick has three children, a son and two younger daughters.

Howard said he hopes to meet Vick when he gets out of prison, where he is serving a 23-month prison term on federal charges related to dog fighting.

"I'd say 'Hey man here's your football back that you signed for your boy.' Seeing that it was their first boy you know that's probably got a lot of sentimental value to it I'm sure," Howard told the station.

A storage facility employee told the station that the unit was rented by a Michael Vick and that it was put on auction because the bill hadn't been paid in the very long time.

Thanks for to the kind people of RADAR ONLINE for providing us with the link and the pics to our favorite Olympic Swimmer "Poseidon" Phelps getting his "Pimp Focus" on in the Playboy Strip Club in Vegas.

Life is good for Phelps as you can see. Wonder if he would allow me into the Entourage? I mean every good entourage needs a Bona Fide Sports Expert right? Personally I like my ladies with a little more junk in the trunk, but I am sure I could make it work. Pimp on MP. Pimp on....

Follow-up to my Jordan/ACS article

|

0902_michael_acs_02.jpg

I just received an e-mail earlier this evening in regards to my post about how the American Cancer Society is coming down on Michael Jordan. A representative from PETA emailed me the following:

Hi! I saw that you covered the Michael Jordan/ACS story and thought you might like to know that PETA has something to say about the whole fiasco. We think it's a bit odd that the ACS would call out Michael for smoking an occasional cigar, while the ACS serves cancer-linked meat laden dishes at fundraisers. PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk fired off a letter to John Seffrin, the CEO of the American Cancer Society with her thoughts:

As sure as Michael Jordan could hit clutch jumpers, the ACS has seen all this evidence. In fact, your Web site even admits that "..studies have linked vegetarian diets with a decreased risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and colon cancer." In his letter to Jordan, your spokesperson wrote, "When high-profile athletes publicly display unhealthful habits, they can mislead young people to emulate their behavior." Isn't it safe to say that when a high-profile health group publicly promotes unhealthy habits like meat consumption, it is also misleading Americans, young and old?"

I found it interesting how she mentioned that the American Cancer Society was selective in who they criticized. Which I guess could be said for a lot of organizations it seems that they go after who gets them the most publicity. I mean criticizing Jordan for smoking a stogie would get more hits than the drawbacks of meat consumption. Regardless it is good to know that many types of people read this blog.

In fact here's more information about what she wrote:http://blog.peta.org/archives/2008/09/american_cancer.php?c=pfmjacs08.

Let's just cut to the chase the only reason that Michael Strahan is not in a Giants uniform today has nothing to do with his passion or commitment to the game of football. It has everything to do with an appeals judge saying that he doesn't have to cough up another 7 million and $18,000 a month in child support.

Don't be fooled. In the immortal words of Deion Sanders "Must Be The Money" was all the motivation that Strahan needed to stay in Greece with his "new woman".

If you are Giants fan look at it this way you got Strahan back for one year because of the ridiculous divorce ruling and in that year you won the Super Bowl. Now that the ruling has been corrected you honestly didn't think you would be as fortunate to have him come back again.

As for Strahan's wife she should feel lucky to get what she got out to of the settlement and move on. All women should pay close attention to this quote from the judge in siding with Strahan.

The judges today said it was unfair Strahan was required to pay 91 percent of the child support since his ex-wife, Jean Strahan, was well-educated and employable.

"Both parents have a shared obligation to support their children," wrote Judge Lorraine Parker.

Jean Strahan's "employment opportunities were, in all likelihood, enhanced by her celebrity marriage. There is no question that as a healthy, educated, 41-year-old, (she) is capable of earning her own income," wrote Parker, who was joined by Judges Rudy Coleman and Thomas Lyons.

Boy, not to be too preachy but consequences, consequences, and more consequences (whether good or bad) will occur with whatever decisions one makes. No one knows that better right now than Michael Vick. From poster boy of the NFL to poster boy of what not to do if you are a professional athlete. Despite what your opinion is on the severity of his sentence, and I know that is a hot topic, Michael Vick could have avoided that issue all together had he just made the decision to make some changes in the company he keeps and his thought process as a celebrity.

Not only did he lose his rights for at least 2 years or so, but now we hear that due to some poor decisions as to whom he invested his money with and who he entrusted to help him out of his current financial situation: Translation, he is flat broke.

Enter the upstart United Football League that is planning to throw millions of dollars at Michael Vick once he is released from prison. Michael Vick deserves this chance to redeem himself.

You know greatness when you see it. When you were watching MJ you saw it. When you were watching Montana you saw it. When you were watching Ali you saw it. Greatness doesn't have a question mark behind it. It is known to everyone not just sports fan, but everyone. Your grandmother knows it, Your wife who hasn't watched a sporting event all year knows it; you kid who normally watches Noggin 24/7 knows it because greatness transcends; it permeates. It is its own zone. It's own atmosphere. It's own feel.

As you watched Michael Phelps in the 2008 Olympics, you knew you were watching greatness. You knew you were watching something special. Sometimes we get caught up in thinking that the only great athletes are the ones who can catch, shoot, run or hit a ball, which couldn't be farther from the truth. Because one of the greatest athletes of our time or any time never stepped on a "field".

Try to do anything 17 times in 9 days and see how you feel? Now try to do that against the best competition in the world, many of whom haven't did anything before competing against you and themselves are considered at the top of their sport. Then on top of that, try to accomplish something that has never been done in the history with a bullet on your chest. What do you think the chances are that you would succeed?

One of my favorite quotes of all time is from the great Ric Flair (queue my Ric Flair gif please).

"To Be The Man You Have To Beat The Man"

5odn3a.gif

Everyone wanted to beat Michael Phelps. But no one could. Even when they thought they won, they came up a little bit short.

phelpswin.jpg

Sometimes you can tell more about how great an athlete is by the reactions of their opponent. To a man, they all have the same face after the lost to Phelps. Some disgust, some admiration, but above, all just look in awe and disbelief. They all come in with the belief that they can win and they all walk away with nothing but silver or bronze.

chadjohnsonocho.jpg

I can't tell you how happy I am to have the old Ocho Cinco back. The one from this summer was a little disturbing to me. I much prefer the fun loving, grill wearing, trash-talking and horse-racing Chad.

Earlier this week, Viva Shetty told you how Chad is thinking about legally changing his name to Ocho Cinco which, of course, I think is the coolest thing ever. I would be first in line to buy one with the Corporate Low Limit Not Quite Ballin Paypal BSO MasterCard. As my boy F350 says:

"The marketing aspects would be sick."

But even better than that is Ocho's latest boast that he would like to take on Aquaman aka Michael Phelps in a swimming contest. Here is the quote from Chad:

"Where I'm from -- Liberty City -- I know a couple of people who can beat Michael Phelps right now. Seriously. I'm telling you. And I'm one of 'em."

Chad also claims that he was the three-time Charles Hadley Pool champion in Liberty City, Miami. Of course no records of this exist, but fact-finding takes the fun out of the story. I am begging for someone to put this event together and put it on PPV. You have my $49.95.

*UPDATE*

The good people at WHEREISTAND.COM has provided us with a video of Chad making his boasts.

For all of you crying that Michael Phelps didn't win as much as Milorad Cavic lost the 100 meter butterfly, in the immortal words of the Rock.

"Know Your Role and Shut Your Mouth"

Simply put, great athletes always find a way to win even if that means capitalizing on an opponent's slightest mistake.

The ironic thing was that Cavic didn't make a mistake per se. It was Phelps who was caught in mid stroke which is normally a big no-no. I don't care how great you are, you need a little luck to pull off the type of accomplishment that Michael Phelps is about to pull off. But there is no luck involved in being 7th at the turn and tracking down everyone to win a gold medal. That, my friend, is the definition of a "Serial Killer."

Just like many of you, I watched in amazement as the USA 4x100 freestyle swim team made a dramatic comeback of epic proportions against the trash-talking French Team (see the link below for the entire race). The last time I was that excited about a sporting event Eli Manning was throwing his Hail Mary to David Tyree.

While the accomplishment in it of itself is amazing, I would also like to give a special shout to the Cullen Jones the second African-American swimmer to medal in the history of the Summer Olympics. By all accounts, Jones is a very classy individual who is well liked by all his teammates. He is a great role model for young African-Americans who now know that sports extend out to more just football, basketball and baseball. While I was very proud to be an American as I watched them all take the medal stand, I was even prouder as a Black American to see Mr. Jones receive his gold.

Watch The US Swim Team and Cullen Jones Make History.

Watch Cullen Jones talking to Meredith Vieira on The Today Show about the thrill of winning Gold in such exciting fashion.

Two quick things about the Olympics before getting to the story of Bean and his Chinatown love:

1- The United States better not ever go to war with China.

Did you see those opening ceremonies? You should be concerned about meeting on the battlefield any country that can put on that type of display for a show. Just imagine what they could do if they decided to go bomb some countries. In essence, the USA is like Brett Favre. We have a lot of records and we are very talented, but when push comes to shove, we have a little bit of a gunslinger mentality that normally gets us in trouble. China on the other hand is like Montana to Rice. Deadly efficient, no wasted motion, in essence a serial killer. We don't want to deal with that, but while we are on serial killers.

2- Is Michael Phelps human?

aquaman.jpg

There is a running debate with some friends of mine that he is actually Aquaman (not the somewhat weird Aquaman from the Super Friends days, but the cooler one from the Justice League days). The theory is that at night he jumps in the ocean and communicates with dolphins. In what was supposed to be his weakest event, the 4*400 Medley, he simply destroyed his competition and the world record. After it was over he wasn't even breathing hard. Unless one of his teammates screws up in the relay races, those eight gold medals are a lock.

Now to the story at hand. Who knew that Darth was the next ruler of the Chinese Empire? The reaction that Kobe has gotten since he arrived in Beijing has been eye opening to the point that even American journalist are puzzled by it. In the first game of the Olympic Basketball competition you would have thought Kobe was playing for the Chinese National team. What could be the explanation? My theory is that this generation of Chinese people had a lot more access to the NBA than say the Michael Jordan generation and who gets more coverage than any player in the NBA Kobe Bean Bryant. Unlike in the USA, where ESPN & a million of internet blogs (mine included) and sports-talk radio stations can corrupt a fan's perception of a player in China, all they are seeing is the raw beauty of Kobe's play.

So the next time Kobe's contract comes up, maybe instead of those overseas teams, he should check out the China Garden.

Michael Strahan isn't fooling me. Ever since his ex-wife "Heather Mills" him he has been seen with the likes of Mel B (who is stalker Eddie Murphy as we speak) and now here he is with one of my wives Alicia Keys (ya boy does it Big Love style).

Where I am from what Strahan is doing is called "recouping". In laymen terms when you get milked by a woman you immediately try to find a woman who has much more money than you and milk her. Once in my younger BonaFide days I bought this girl I liked a happy meal from McDonalds and soon after she stop talking to me. I was so devastated I found a new girl who worked at McDonalds. You following me?

So keep your pimp game strong Mike and I will be rooting for you to get those millions back in your account because any enemy of Tiki "I don't like being black" Barber is a friend of mine.

When NBA Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing was a freshman at Georgetown, the Hoyas worked out with members of the Washington Bullets (now known as the Wizards). Ewing will always remember one question he got from one of the Bullets.

It was Mitch Kupchak, saying to me, 'Why are you in college? You should be in the NBA. You're ready to play right now," Ewing said. "In his mind I was ready, but my college experience was something I've always treasured."

Times sure have changed since Ewing was a freshman in 1981. During that summer's draft the first three picks were underclassmen, but the rest of the first round picks were all seniors. In the 2007 draft, only six of the 30 first round picks were seniors.

As of June 12th, 13 freshmen have already declared for the 2008 NBA Draft. All of those 13 freshmen are expected to be taken in the draft with the probability of the first five picks all being freshmen. Also, for the second year in a row, the top pick is considered to be a choice between two freshmen. Unlike Ewing, who will always treasure his college moments, the kids of today cannot wait for their opportunity in the NBA.

So Mike Vick is playing on the prison football team right out of a scene in "The Longest Yard." Now in my twisted mind, he is using this time on the field to plan a "Prison Break" style escape. Instead of using tattoos, he is using discarded dog biscuits. The funny thing will be in about 18 months when NFL scouts start showing up to break down how he is playing. I can see Mel Kiper Jr breaking it down.

"Prisoner Vick shows great elusiveness when scrambling out of the pocket to avoid the rush from defensive end Shante Sheri Johnson. who you may have known as Sean Johnson in the past. Prisoner Vick still shows his inaccuracy in the pocket when he tries to thread the needle on a pass between solitary confinement and the prison cemetery."

This is reality TV at its finest. Someone please get ESPN 19 on this ASAP.
