Today while driving home from work, listening to sports talk radio (Keep up the good work Mike Missanelli), I heard breaking news that Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson passed away. He lost his fight with melanoma. A somber, and sad way for the birds to start their training camp. He will be missed.

Here are some quick thoughts about what's going on in sports news. I'm offering my opinion on some of the topics out right now from the Erin Andrews video to Mike Vick to my non-sports beef. Enjoy.

Earlier this week I posted the 5 teams from the NFC I feel will reach the playoffs plus 1 that I wasn't so sure of. I will now attempt to do the same for the AFC teams. Now, for some reason I found this one a lot more challenging than the NFC. Some may say that's because the AFC is much stronger. If you look back at it, from a conference standpoint, the same top teams remain at the top in both conferences. I just have a much harder time picking winners in the AFC because so many teams are improving there, whereas the NFC still has the same standout few each year no matter what things look like on paper during the off-season. Anyway, with no further ado, here are my picks for the AFC playoff picture in no particular order.

Check out today's Daily Line.

If Wilt Chamberlain was considering a comeback to the NBA next season, that would be news. But because people don't generally come back from the dead to play basketball, we have to settle for the Brett Favre soap opera to lead off every SportsCenter. Why are we still talking about this?
I blame Brett Favre for it all, of course. I can't blame ESPN for following Favre around to high schools and doctor's offices, because that's what they do. They're just trying to sniff out a story that might be there, during a slow news period. Let's face it, the NBA players just aren't embarrassing themselves enough to sustain press interest.
It's Brett Favre's fault because all he has to do is stop throwing footballs with kids 30 years younger than he is. All he has to do is stop listening to offers from Mark Wilf, then Mark Clayton and Len Pasquarelli won't have anything to write about. It's not like they need this to keep their jobs. I hear Pasquarelli's on his way out, anyway.
It's also Brett Favre's fault because he already set the precendent by coming back last year after he "retired." Now, every time he tries to retire after this won't be taken seriously at all. Which means, whether he plays this season or not, we'll probably hear "rumblings" about a comeback all through the next two seasons.

Because quarterbacks, not children, are our most delicate resource, the NFL owners have invented the Bradymobile to keep them safe from human contact. It's just like the Popemobile, except it's also safe from missile attacks and bad breath. (Pictured: Bradymobile prototype. Not pictured: Lost sense of athletic pride.)
Their efforts are aimed at making this violent, hard-hitting game safer. They have decided that it's not the intensity and hard hits that keep fans coming back, but instead the intellectualism. It's hard to appreciate the human chess on the field when the players keep hitting each other. In a similar story, the UFC decided to outlaw punching, kicking, and wrestling so cage-fighting isn't so rough on its fighters. Inspired by the movement, the US military is considering adding pillows to the inside of their bombs to make war safer.

Wow. Buffalo. And don't be fooled by that fake smile over there, because he does not look happy about it. Might as well have exiled T.O. to Siberia. Or Kansas City. On the bright side, no one's going to see him screw up anything out there. No one saw that coming, mostly because no one even remembered that Buffalo had an NFL team.
So, yeah, Terrell Owens signed a one-year, $6.5 million deal with the Bills. The deal validates the wild claims that agent Drew Rosenhaus made when he said that T.O. would have a deal within the week, although, judging from the look on T.O.'s face during his press conference, I don't think either one of them would consider this a "win." Personally, I believed that Owens would be out of work for a few more months, at which point, teams would no longer be influenced by ESPN's "T.O. Hater Brigade", and realize that at least 15 of them had nothing to lose by signing Owens.

At 12:05 AM, ESPN reporter Michael Smith broke the news that the Dallas Cowboys were releasing Terrell Owens.
Terrell Owens has been the NFL's most polarizing figure not named Michael Vick in a long, long, time. His talent can't be denied, but it doesn't stop people from begging for him to stop acting like a little girl who's not getting the prettiest dress for Easter services.

So Jay Cutler is upset because the Denver Broncos entertained the idea of trading him. In other news, Jay Cutler believes that the entire city of Denver is resting on his shoulders and that trading him is such utter folly that even to discuss it is laughable.
Jay Cutler should just quit crying and act like a man about this. It's the nature of the business he chose to be in. You think old people cry just because their kids put them in a home? Of course not, because they knew that this was part of the deal when they decided to beat their kids for not mowing the lawn in a checkerboard fashion like they were told. It's just something that comes with the situation, like tiger trainers losing limbs.

As much as I'd like to see an upgrade to my Atlanta Falcons' defense, I'm really very happy that the Falcons didn't land Albert Haynesworth. Let some other, stupider owner give $41 million in guarantees to a guy who hasn't played a full season since 2002, in a league when breaking the bank for a defensive player has NEVER worked. Haynesworth is good. He's really good. But there are starting quarterbacks making less money than he is now. And those quarterbacks aren't known for taking plays off, like he is.
And while that retard owner is at it, why not throw another $22.5 million in guarantees at DeAngelo Hall, probably the most overrated corner in the NFL? I can say that with some certainty, having spent four years watching him get lit up in Atlanta. Not even the sorriest NFL quarterback avoided challenging DeAngelo Hall, let's give him $54 million. Well, I guess you do need someone to fill the position.
Imagine being a fan of what, by record, is the worst football team ever to take the field for a season in the NFL. Most people would run and hide, bury their heads in the sand in shame.
Meet "Dan." He decided to pay homage to the team by tattooing the Lion logo, along with an "0-16, 2008" below it on his right pectoral.
While most of you will laugh and make fun of him for what he did, I applaud him for sticking with his team, even though they went down in flames.
From WJBK in Detroit...
By now, we have all read, seen or heard the Utah Utes football team beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and finished the season undefeated. What we may not have understood in all that is the Utes have now finished the season undefeated twice in the last five years, and were still shut out of the BCS Championship.

Didn't take someone in the state long to finally call out the BCS...Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff.
More after the jump...

Nine fantasy football leagues. Eight playoff appearances. Three championships. One second place. For the greatest fantasy football player in the universe Robert Littal.
My fantasy football seasons are over and a part of me is very sad today. Being the addict that I am I am already thinking about potential 2009 Fantasy Football draft sleepers (Pierre Thomas will have a monster 2009 trust me).
I must tell you the story of the one fantasy football league that I didn't make the playoffs in. I started off 0-5 and a laughingstock of the league, but when you are the greatest fantasy football player of all time you never ever give up. I rolled off a 7-2 run to end the regular season to end up 7-7. Only four teams made the playoffs and three slots were locked up. I would win all tiebreakers for the 7-7 teams because I had the most overall points between those teams. Everything broke in my favor. All the teams that needed to lose lost and it looked like I was on my way to become the team no one wanted to meet in the playoffs. The only thing that was stopping me was a 7-6 team that was down 25 points with only one player playing in the Monday Night tilt between Tampa Bay and Carolina. Unfortunately for me that player was Antonio Bryant. 200 yards and one amazing TD later I was on the outside looking in.
That is the gift and curse of Fantasy Football. I have so many stories I could tell you I could literally write a book. Be it my in genius trade of LT for Matt Forte or how I drafted Steve Slaton and Kurt Warner back to back in the 10th and 11th round respectively. I could on and on.
Can't wait to next year? Who will be the #1 Pick? AP or Forte? Where do you put Matt Ryan now?
I know I know I am such a loser. But I am Bona Fide.

I found this in the LA Times, since the last Harris Poll and Coaches Poll are made public they took the time out to break down how supposedly unbiased people voted and as you can imagine some of these are crazy.
The 61 coaches this year picked Oklahoma and Florida as the top teams, but those weren't their only decisions.
* Oh, what fun, but what about your credibility?
Missouri Coach Gary Pinkel, incredibly, had Utah No. 15 and Boise State No. 16 while putting Georgia Tech at No. 9.
Memo to Pinkel: Utah and Boise State are a combined 24-0 this year and both schools have won BCS bowl games in the last four years.
At the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, Boise State scored a shocking upset over Oklahoma, a team that annually pummels Missouri. Last weekend the score was Sooners 62, Tigers 21.
Georgia Tech did not even make it to the title game of the Atlantic Coast Conference, a league that is 1-9 all-time in BCS bowls. Virginia Tech, which won this ACC this year, is No. 25 on Pinkel's ballot.
* And then there's Hal . . .
Last year, New Mexico State Coach Hal Mumme put Hawaii at No. 1 on his final ballot only to watch the Warriors get pounded by Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.
This year, Mumme voted Boise State (12-0) and Utah (12-0), teams vastly superior to Hawaii, at No. 8 and No. 9.
New Mexico State just fired Mumme, but we think it had more to do with on-field issues.
* Well, of course the Scarlet Knights should be ranked.
Rutgers received two Piscataway pats on the back, both at No. 25. One was from Rutgers Coach Greg Schiano and the other was from Fresno State Coach Pat Hill, whose team opened the season with a win at Rutgers.
* Maybe he's just smarter than we are.
Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach thought the national title game should have been Oklahoma versus his team, which he voted No. 2. Leach voted Texas No. 5 (ouch).
* Roll Tide.
Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden put Alabama No. 3, ahead of No. 4 Texas. Bowden was born in Birmingham, attended Alabama for a time and idolized Bear Bryant. Bowden also had Penn State at No. 5.
He and Joe Paterno are close friends.
* He'll be home for Christmas . . . we think.
Terry Bowden, college football analyst for Yahoo, wrote this year that his brother Tommy deserved to lose his job at Clemson. Then, on Sunday, Bowden didn't even put his dad's Florida State team in his final top 25.
Bobby voted his Seminoles at No. 21. Last year, the highest vote Tommy's Clemson squad got was a No. 11 from his dad.
Is it time to cut Tommy out of the will?
* It seems only right, right?

It doesn't matter to me who wins between Oklahoma vs. Florida in the fictional National Championship game because in reality we have no real national championship with Seven teams with just 1 defeat and 2 undefeated teams.
Let me show you the twisted logic of the BS system. What is the number reason that Florida is in the National Championship game? It is because they beat the number one team in the country on a neutral site. Now Texas did the exact same thing. They beat Oklahoma then the #1 team in the country on a neutral field.
They both have one loss. Florida at home against Ole Miss and Texas on the road at Texas Tech.
Now you tell me who more deserves to be in the Championship game?
The point I am trying to make is that this isn't a Perry Mason TV Movie. We shouldn't have to go through 1001 scenarios to explain why one team is better than another. Cases can be made for all of the teams involve and that is the problem.
I have no issue with Oklahoma and Florida playing for the fictional national championship, but that is all it is a "paper championship".
A true champion should be decided on the field not when they get their first lose (see Florida) or how many 60 points game they can put up to impress the voters (see Oklahoma). A true champion doesn't care about running through a gauntlet of teams to prove they are the best.

Here is what the BCS is telling every college team, player, coach and fan. It doesn't matter what happens on the field. All that matters is impressing the voters and manipulating the computers. So in that regard College Football is no different than a Presidential Election (ironically the President hates the system).
This isn't complicated people.
Texas beat Oklahoma's ass on a neutral field.
Texas & Oklahoma are both 11-1.
THERE IS NO POLL IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA OR CANADA THAT SHOULD HAVE OKLAHOMA RANKED HIGHER THAN TEXAS.

These rankings are not based on off who I think can beat who, but the top 10 teams in the country strictly based of their play. Comments are welcomed.
1- Alabama Crimson Tide: I have been saying they are going to lose all year. I am running out of chances to be right.
2- Florida Gators: Best team in the country.
3- Texas Longhorns: How can you Oklahoma over them when they beat them straight up?
4- Oklahoma Sooners: You know you are good offensive team when the announcers says your opponent played well on defense and you still put up 60.
5- USC Trojans- Hopefully they were the nail in the coffin for Charlie Weiss

A plan for the economy, a plan for healthcare, a plan for the middle class...it seems there isn't any sector of the American way of life that President-elect Barack Obama doesn't have some sort of plan for but college football? Hmmm... In an interview Sunday with Steve Kroft of 60 minutes, Obama touched on the economy, the girls, the prospect of a new puppy, his mother-in -law in the White House along with other dire areas of interest to the American public before capping off the interview with his stimulus plan for college football. College football you say? It seems the President Elect is continuing to lobby to conquer and reconstruct the weapons of mass destruction in college sports known as the BCS system. And with good reason. The system, as many fans and analysts of sports nation can arguably agree, could use more use more upgrading than Solange's wardrobe. With a bias point system ran like an ironclad fist by the media bent on selecting ratings worthy teams, is it any wonder that the undefeated and one loss teams of "lower" conferences don't have a chance in hell of making the BCS championship game each year?
While not foolproof, like his road map to revive the middle class, Obama may be on to something.
Steve Kroft
What can you do or plan to do about getting a college football playoff for the national championship?
Obama
"This is important...I think any sensible person would say if you have a bunch of teams that have played throughout the season --- many of them with one or two losses, and there's no clear, decisive winner... we should create a playoff system. Eight teams, three rounds to determine a national champion. It would add three extra weeks; you could trim back the regular season. I don't know of any serious fan of college football who has disagreed with me on this... so I'm gonna throw my weight around a little bit. I think it's the right thing to do."
The BCS response is not so surprisingly as political correct as McCain's concession speech, marking the BCS' reluctance to listen to reason. After all, what sponsor in their right mind would sanction a playoff game between Ball State and say Oregon for instance? Snore. BCS coordinator, John Swofford had this to say:
"First of all I want to congratulate newly elected President Obama and I am glad he has a passion for college football like so many other Americans. For now, our constituencies -- and I know he understands constituencies -- have settled on the current BCS system, which the majority believe is the best system yet to determine a national champion while also maintaining the college football regular season as the best and most meaningful in sports."
Looks like its back to the drawing board for Obama's transition team

5- Penn State: Best team in the Big 10?

As soon as USC loss to Oregon State I marked in my handy dandy notepad:
"The BCS is BS"
The reason being I can already see what is going to happen before it even happens. There will be multiple one loss teams at the end of the year that will be bitching and moaning that they didn't get their chance to play for the "Fictional" National Championship. Normally I don't condone bitching and moaning, but in this case it would be warranted for all parties involved including the fans of those teams.
Just imagine a 1-loss USC team being picked over a 1-loss SEC Team. If you don't think it can happen you haven't being paying attention to college football over the last decade. Someone is going to get screwed and more importantly the fans are going to get screwed by not having a real playoff system in place.

I wanted to get at least 2 weeks into the season before I came out with the Official BSO Top 10 College Football poll.
Just so you know for new readers to the site this isn't a good old boys polls. I call them as I see them, so it is flexible and not a rigid poll. If your team plays like crap expect them to drop even if they win and if your team has a big victory over a ranked opponent expect them to jump. The rankings are not based on off who I think can beat who, but the top 10 teams in the country strictly based of their play. Comments are welcomed.
1- USC: Big statement game against OSU coming up.
2- Georgia: Loaded, but will they survive the SEC schedule?
3- Florida: Defense is scary took care of The U.
4- Ohio State: If they beat USC automatically go to #1, but they played horribly last week.
5- Missouri: Defense is still suspect.
6- Oklahoma: Sneaky BCS contender.
7- East Carolina: Didn't just beat West Va. They kicked there ass.
8- LSU: Waiting for their shots against the big boys.
9- Alabama: Understandable let down after big win against Clemson.
10- Penn State: Looking very good

• Beanie Wells get well soon. Seriously like right now today we need you homie.
• USC is the best team in the country.
• Speaking of USC do they have ESPN on their payroll? Yes I am talking to you Mark May.
• Lou Holtz in HD. Not a good look.
• Props to Alabama for crushing Clemson but I loathe the fact I am going to have to hear that Nick Saban is a god. He maybe an asshole, but he is a damn good coach.
• Clemson will never been a threat under Tommy Bowden.
• No one can stop the Missouri Offense (put up 52 on Illinois) unfortunately the Missouri defense doesn't look like they can stop anyone (Illinois put up 42 on them).
• Can Juice Williams get some Heisman Hype?
• Dave Wannstedt maybe the worst head coach ever.
• No upset this year for Appalachian State.
• Speaking of upsets the Michigan Wolverines looked lost trying to run the spread offense. It will be a long year in Ann Arbor.
• How old is Joe Paterno and why do I get the feeling he will get ahead of Bobby Bowden in the overall wins race this year.
• Everybody be safe down in the Gulf Coast.

1- THOU SHALL ALWAYS STUDY YOUR DRAFT SETTINGS, RULES, ROSTERS & SCORING SYSTEM.
I cannot emphasize this enough, if you don't know the rules of your league you are going to fail. None of the other commandments matter if you have no idea how your league is run. If your league starts 2 QBs then QBs become a premium. If your league gives 1 point for reception, then RBs who catch the ball out of the backfield have to bump up in your rankings. If your Commish only allows 50 roster moves a year, you have to be very careful who you pick up on the waiver wire or how many trades you make. These are just some of the scenarios you have to take into account. Every league is set up a little different, so knowing your league inside and out will help you come draft time and during the season.
2- THOU SHALL ALWAYS DRAFT AS LEAST 2 RUNNING BACKS WITHIN THE FIRST 3 ROUNDS OF THE DRAFT. (WELL NOT ALWAYS ANYMORE).
In Fantasy Football RBs are Gods. It is as simple as that. It is not necessarily that they are the top point producers (QBs and WRs routinely make it into the Top 10 Scorers); it is that there are very few good ones and even the good ones get injured. Most leagues start 2 RBs and sometimes a flex and to be honest in a 12 team league it is very difficult to find 24 quality RBs and damn near impossible to find 36. While it maybe tempting to use your first 2 picks on Tom Brady and Terrell Owens, it won't look that great when you're starting RBs are Selvin Young and Matt Forte.
*Amendment*
This has been my #2 rule for every year I have come out with the Fantasy Football Commandments, but it is time to make a small change to it. You still absolutely must pick at least one running back in the 1st two rounds of the draft, but if you are in the second round don't pass up an elite WR or QB to take a RB you are not 100% sure is going to be the primary ball carrier for their team. The way teams are using a time share system with their RBs it makes more sense to take that elite WR or QB in round two and take a risk on a time share RB in round 3.
3-THOU SHALL NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER DRAFT A QB IN THE 1ST ROUND UNLESS HIS NAME IS TOM BRADY OR PEYTON MANNING.
Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are the exceptions to the rule all other QBs should be ignored (to be honest I still wouldn't be comfortable drafting a QB in Round 1 but that is just me) and let me tell you why. First while QBs are normally top point producers, in most leagues you can only start one, which diminishes their value. Secondly seasons like the one Brady just put up are anomalies. Thirdly you can get quality QBs from a fantasy perspective in the 4th, 5th or 6th round.
4- THOU SHALL NOT WORRY ABOUT WIDE RECEIVERS.
If Running Back is the hardest position to fill, Wide Receiver is the easiest. If you don't have a starting WR by round 4 don't worry because at that point their will still be quality WRs on the board. There will still be starting Wide Receivers as deep as the 10th round in most drafts, so don't panic if there is a run on receivers.
5- THOU SHALL ONLY BE CONSIDERED A REAL FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE IF IT STARTS INDIVIDUAL DEFENSIVE PLAYERS.
Fantasy Football is much more fun with IDP because one it includes both sides of the ball and two it involves more strategy from the owners. When drafting IDP the most important thing to remember is know your league's scoring system. If it rewards a lot of points for tackles go Linebacker heavy, if it rewards sacks more go Defensive Line heavy. You get the idea. Remember defense wins championships.

First off, the game of football should be America's past time. I'm still trying to figure out who elected baseball? Ask yourself, what team is nicknamed America's team? It ain't the NY Yankees although one could argue that. It's the Dallas Cowboys.
What other sport can argue that its biggest game should be honored as a national holiday - such as the Super Bowl. It completely grabs hold of the country...the world, while households transform into football meccas for 6 hours. How else can you explain companies paying $2 million or more for a 30 second ad?
But, my reason for this entry is too start a revolution. I'm not campaigning for football to be the national past time, but for the women of the world to revolt against the myth that we don't love the game. When I'm out having cocktails or shopping in a sports store and I overhear a conversation about football, my ears get all warm and fuzzy. I then jump at the opportunity to join in.
In a majority of the time, my opinion and comments are welcome and respected, but there's a instance or two where I am challenged regarding my knowledge of the game. I'm then hit with a barrage of questions of who, when, what and how. At this point, I smile because I'm competitive by nature, and when you know what you know, you know the rest! Besides, this gives me the opportunity to shut some mouths, while opening some closed minds.
To my ladies, men absolutely adore a woman that can talk sports, intellectually that is. It's a conversation starter and finisher. Even if football isn't your sport of choice, but you're single and looking, learn a sport and test the waters. To all the men who still feel the need to test me, do so. But when I put you at ease and start making you smile, remember I can cook too. Most importantly, I'm married!

Quick, name one memorable play from the College Bowl season. Can't do it can you? The reason why no one cares about College Football in December and January ia because their championship is not decided on the field, but by a bunch of computers, school presidents and mostly incompetent voters.
On the flip side, the NCAA Men's basketball tournament hasn't even started yet and there have already been 4 or 5 moments that have been etched in our memories. Once again let me repeat: the tournament hasn't even started. These are just the conference tournaments.
Yesterday I was glued to my TV while watching both major and mid-major schools fight it out just for the right to be in the tournament. I loved that Duke lost; I jumped out of my seat when Psycho Ty won the game for North Carolina. I couldn't believe my eyes when Georgia guard Zac Swansey hit a three pointer that looked like it could only be made in a video game to send their game against Kentucky to overtime. I was even more amazed when Georgia won that game and then another game within an eleven hour time frame. I could go on and one, but I think I have made my point.
Just imagine if we were coming down to the last week of the college football season with teams trying to fight their way into a tournament. It would be the best Saturday of the year and the tournament would make these old, school-presidents more money that they could ever imagine. I maybe dreaming, but hopefully soon NCAA College-Football leaders will get their heads out of their asses and give us what we want.
