HOW THE NBA’S IMAGE PROBLEM LETS DAVID STERN GET AWAY WITH ANYTHING

It looks as if NBA Commissioner David Stern has been issuing decrees like he was Lord of the Universe and not simply the commissioner of a sport’s league. Last year we had the dress code and the age limit, while this year we have the technical foul rule and the new ball. Are these the actions of a man looking to make changes for the better, or of someone who is drunk with power and wanting to make the league be the way he wants it to be? Public opinion isn’t unanimous one way or the other, but what do the facts say? And is he right or wrong for seeking these changes, regardless of how draconian they seem? Now to be fair, the dress code and age limit were agreed to by the union, so he wasn’t issuing executive orders from on high with both of those. But at the same time, he’s negotiating with a player’s union which is not known for being the most competent out there at a time when most of the paying customers are more likely to side with him than with the players. So there aren’t a lot of things that he has to worry about not getting when he puts them out there.
