Oregon RB LaGarette Blount KO of Boise State DL Byron Hout Video
by Robert Littal | Posted on Friday, September 4th, 2009
I saw it live and I still can’t believe it. The lessons to be learned here:
1- If you going to talk trash keep your helmet on.
2- Lagarette Blunt probably should take up boxing.
3- Lagarette Blunt maybe related to Ron Artest.
4- The combination of the blue turf and the hideous Oregon Ducks uniforms obviously causes mental instability.
5- Did I mention do not talk trash with your helmet off?
*Update*
Lagarett Blount has been suspended for the season by University of Oregon.
I think it is the wrong decision, but I am going to sleep on it and see how I feel tomorrow.

Rob, please dont delete this comments as this is a legitimate long time reader with concerns.
BSO has fell off.
There are no more classic articles. Yourself, Mr. Littal you simply report sensationalist media issues. I remember when you used to break it down like the Jack Bauer and Darth Bryant series. Right now this site is more TMZ than SportsIllustrated. We come to this site for a fresh opinion away from ESPN. Instead we get Michael Beasley twitpics. Are you serious? Please bring the articles back to BSO.
And the new layout is horrible. 90% of the time you cant select a image that looks right on it. If you aren't going to spend the extra time to resize the image then why use ths style layout?
IMO this site has taken a huge step back in 09. Please bring it back to glory. Peace.
i told him that two months ago. He doesnt listen. The only reason people come to his site is because he gives free ppvs.
You are entitled to your opinion, but BSO hasn't changed we have been posting pics and vids for years (Lebron Pimp Focus..D Wade China Sex Enhancement Ad, Confessions of a groupie and etc).
In the middle of all that we still have taken on serious topics like Steve McNair, Michael Vick, Plaxico Burress.
Actually the Steve McNair article widely considered by many the blog article of the year and last time I checked I wrote it
the majority of people approve of the new layout.
BSO hasn't changed…BSO exposure has changed, but no one will ever change Robert Littal. The archives don't lie.
I actually like the new layout. Not only does it look better, but more importantly it works better with my browser and moves faster.
I feel there is a strong cultural divide in popular sports today. It feels like we (blacks) are being villianized by popular sports media, which is run largely by whites and Jews (if you consider Jews to be ethnically different).
My point is that the Blount punch will be the talk of the day on all sports media on Friday and he will be criticized and reprimanded by popular media. But Why??? Is there a standard that was broken? Hockey players throw punches every game, and not only is it accepted by media and fans, but it is actually encouraged and applauded. When Jason Varitek attacks A-Rod, ESPN loves it and the popular media eats it up. They make up reasons for why it was ok. A black guy hits a white player (Kermit Washington or in this case LaGarrette Blount), the popular media goes beserk and call for his head.
Does anyone else notice the difference or is it just me?
hockey players typically fight and punch each other during the game. Ever notice the lack of hockey players public antics in the media? Other than patrick kane this summer and the Staal brothers last summer, either the media doesn't care or they keep a low profile and realize that kids everywhere idolize them.
There needs to be discussion abotu Byron Hout's part in this. Of course Blount is ABSOLUTELY wrong for getting phyiscal and he should be punished heavily. But for the commentators to not even mention Hout's role in going to Blount and actually making "LIGHT" contact with him…to provoke him…is just not right.
Another story of the big bad black man…but no talk of Hout…who instigated.
No one deserves to be punched and Blount's actions are…well…Cowardice and Dangerous to sports.
But you tube enthusiasts, don't act like the clock strug 00:00 and Blount went running to Hout to knock him out.
He didn't.
I am Black man who lives in Portland, Oregon…..It is not a place for Blacks with dignity…A few years ago, a Black University of Oregon football player was ran off the freeway and killed by a White guy…..It's not surprise to most Blacks that Coach Chip Kelley kicked Blunt off of the team…..And Boise State coach did nothing the player that started it….
My advice to Blacks who kids are are offered scholarships to any of the Oregon Colleges should look at the history of this state pertaining to Blacks…..Oregon still have sundown laws on the books…..Blacks can not be on the streets after the sun goes down!
As a long time reader and one of the new writers, I think that BSO has improved. The whole "TMZ" comment feels insulting to me because BSO writers are actually humorous compared to the folks at TMZ. Plus I think the editorials are on point, not sensationalist. It's still different, and it's still better. I still say we need BSO TV though, just sayin'. As far as the new layout, everything has to improve. I like it, and it'll just get better. Stay tuned and keep reading, and if you don't like something, make suggestions. Everyone can complain, but few can innovate.
Dude…. this site becomes TMZ because rob does not ralize one thing… hes a dope writer. We want to see his fresh opinion on things. But Rob constantly shits on his readers by doing the twitpics and doing the whole sports version of tmz. ive been trying to tell rob for a long time but he doesnt listen
LaMont's spin is interesting and worth consideration. *pause* OK, I'm done. If you make it about race/ethnicity (or religion, in the case of the jews), then that's what it is about. This isn't about the black man being villified for clocking a white man… this is about a football player who lost his frikkin mind.
What happens in hockey is, yes, at a different standard. You don't tackle in baseball, you don't spike the ball in tennis, you don't throw punches in football.
This is just THIS season's first example of punk thuggery… irrespective of ethnicity or race.
Anyone who has played competetively knows smack talk. Reaction to any taunt with physical violence is never OK and if you are going to talk smack, you should expect smacktalk in return… not a punch. Blount lost control, threw a punch, and should not be allowed to play football the rest of the season… when you lack self-control you have lost the privelege of playing the game…
as for Hout, he should spend a week in a cheerleader's uni for going down after that weak-a$$ swat.
I think Smack talk should only go so far. Some people take it too far, and I for one would love to know what Haut said to push Blount that far. I think Blount took a sucker punch, cause Haut wasn't looking (which is cowardly in my book) but I still want to know what Haut said. Perez Hilton thought he should be able to push as far as he wants and everyone just take it in stride, I'm glad he got his bell rung because he deserved it. Free speech has consequences, not everyone knows how far is too far.
(1) Had Boise State head coach Chris Petersen not distracted Hout, we may have had a real boxing match.
(2) What does the sucker punch have to do with the fray on the way to the tunnel?
Aside from the smack talk, there was actual physical contact which precipitated the punch. This is not a sticks and stones scenario. Haut seeked out Blount, shoved him lightly, and said something. This is not a black man losing his frikkin mind. If it happened on the street, spectators would agree that Haut instigated the conflict and he got what he had coming to him.
"You don't throw punches in football…" Have you ever played football? There are punches thrown all the time. Have you not paid attention to NFL training camp? Raiders coaches are punching. The NY Jets had a huge brawl and Rex Ryan loved it and felt it was great for his team. I am sure that most teams have a fight during training camp alone.
this didn't happen on the street, it happened in a stadium, in a uniform, on television.
yeah, I played and yeah, we punched. and when we were caught (by refs and coaches) we paid the consequences. I remember getting my bell rung, retaliating, and running until I puked. Then I ran some more. In this case, the consequence was hanging up the pads for the rest of the season. Perfect.
I wish every highschool player out there saw that… and I hope those who did will learn a lesson about self-control, sportsmanship, and leaving it on the field.
I agree that your nouns agree with your verbs and your topic sentence sets forth your argument…having said that. In my view, your premise lacks balance.. There is a theory called cause and effect. Any astute logician applies this rule as a first nature of thinking…..Who caused the incident….and how did the action play out? The law has provocation protection in it……Law enforcement will not bring charges against either player. Therefore, we have zero sum……
And verbosity does not give weight to your opinion…..like a-holes…..we all have them. It 's what it is…Name calling does not enlighten….Your experience is not Universal applicable. The law extends to all……You stated: "Reaction to any taunt with physical violence is never OK….." Again, that's your opinion……on this the law does not echo you…..The verdict is in….NO ARREST!.
I agree. I noticed the site is becoming a bit like TMZ but in all fairness to Rob, the BIG stories come from basketball and baseball (college and pro) and right now, it is a fairly slow news period. I just hate it when I come to the site and see articles about a sprite slam dunk contest, new gatorade flavors, and sneakers. I think Rob is expending too much energy on his twitter girlfriends.
Those sprite, gatorade and sneakers post are what has allowed me to upgrade the visibilty of the site. We can't live in the past.
This isn't 2007 the facts are we are a bigger site and that comes with bigger responsibilites.
He could dish it out, but CLEARLY he couldn't take it. Don't talk trash before the game in a public arena and you don't have to worry about classless ppl coming up to you after the game to rub it in your face. There are NO WORDS that would justify punching someone in the face, especially when they're not looking and being partially restrained by another person. And trying to get to the fans was just outrageous.
My first reaction was "get him out of here." But I think I'm getting benevolent in my old age. He needs to be severely punished. I would say maybe 2 games and some sort of on going punishment. It would be nice if they would apologize to one another as well.
The whole season?!? OUCH! I think that's a bit much. At the same time I can kind of understand Oregon's position. I'm sure that was beyond embarrassing for the program and the school. And I saw in another video that he made contact with a fan. That wasn't going to help him. How unfortunate.
I'm not absolving the Boise St. player, or the crazy fans in Boise, but Blount has no one to blame but himself here. You have to keep your head. Dude is a senior, and badly needed to show and prove to the scouts what he can do on the field. Now he doesn't have that chance, and may have cost himself an NFL career and millions of dollars. Mel Kiper had him on the board at running back, but not at the top. Dude clearly needed to make some noise in order to move up the board and increase his chances of getting drafted. If you're in that position, you have to keep your head and not get suckered into the BS.
what blount did was an embarrassment and made black people look bad..with tthat being said this is football not ballroom dancing..its a physical game knockin heads off and adrenaline runs high..that dude talked smak and got cracked..big deal..when Zidane did it he was lauded as a national hero..but this kid is now consedred "undraftable" and his career is over..getfugouttahere!
Most Blacks are taught: A person can say anything they want about them, as long as they don't touch them. We saw what Blount did to Hout.
If Portland, Oregon had a NFL team for sure Blount's career would be over. The Nfl is a business and the owners are looking to increase the bottom lines….They look for talent. Granted, Blount may not go in the first round…..But he'll be in someone camp next year.
The Portland Trailblazers look for character traits in players to fill seats. But they never will win another championship. The organization gave in to a Sports guy in a local newspaper….Tell me the color of a player in an incident and I can tell you what his headline will be….This caused the Blazers t o trade players who went on and win NBA Championships with other teams.
Oregon is a place where the local talent is not good enough to compete national….And because of that there are lots of haters. They trash talk people who can compete Nationally….Hout is not on anyone radar. Now, he's linked with a person who was on select lists….
Steel, Your logic reeks: What Blount did make Black people look bad? So we can conclude what Charles Mason did make White people look bad! Or you're you saying a Black represents all Blacks…..And White people are individuals…and their acts only represent the individual.
What about President Obama? Does he make all Blacks look good…..Or are you a Birtther? After all, the Founding Fathers said Blacks were 3/5 of a person black…..This none-sense was in the U.S. Constitution…..Now you are repeating this none-sense!
Again, Phil Knight of Nike dictates what happens at the University of Oregon Athletic Department. He withdrew his largess unless the University forced the former Athletic Director out and install his man who did not have a sports background.
Nike was in the news all the time in the 80's for its refusal to hire Blacks. Blount punched a White players. These kind of Black athletes Mr. Knight do not cotton to…..He promotes the Tiger Woods' and the Michael Jordans" of the World. Jim Brown said if he were holding an event for Blacks…..He would not invite Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan.
Coach Chip Kelley had no choice but booth Blount!
That nigga gangsta, he's surronded by nothing but blue jerseys, knocked someone out in a blue jersey and walk away out of the crowd of blue jerseys untouched
Talking in codes is what people do when they lack facts….gangster is the correct spelling….not ganngstra..I understand your code. Do you have proof Blount is a member of a gang of criminals? Your comment says more about you than it does about Blount. "BIRTHERS" think Blacks have to be validated by them. Sir, your day has come and gone….Wisdom is not something you've cultivated.
In the words of Chris Tucker " He got knocked the f….. out!!
As far as this site becoming TMZ, well it's somewhat true. I personally loved the old layout of BSO myself and used to look forward to coming here about twice per week. The flavor was unique and no one did it like BSO. I liked the contrary viewpoint of BSO, as opposed to ESPN and Fox Sports-online..
Coach Peterson of Boise State University(BSU) Is a classic guy: He faulted his player as well for the Blount incident. I looked up his history. He's a California Guy…..And so is his AD,,,,,BSU recruits all over the country….He understands the inner-city culture. He's the type coach I played for back in the day. Although, I was the first Black baller to play for my Alma Mater. The experience is a life time of enjoyable memories. He admitted he didn't know much about Black culture….but he said he knew talent…and talent has no color….But talent does not garner special treatment….."If a player is wrong I'll say it……my player or another team's player!" That's what I admire about Coach Peterson of BSU. He's a character builder.
Also, I found it's striking that BSU has 4 assistance Black coaches….and Oregon has only two. Yet, the University of Oregon has twice as many Black players….It makes me wonder.
