“Who the hell is Mel Kiper?” “He’s never been a player, he’s never been a coach, he’s never been a scout, he’s never been an administrator, and all of a sudden, he’s an expert. He has no more credentials to do what he’s doing than my neighbor, and my neighbor’s a postman.”
That was then Colts GM Bill Tobin in 1994 replying to criticisms by ESPN Draft Expert Mel Kiper, who disagreed with the Colts pick of Trev Alberts over Trent Dilfer.
In retrospect, Kiper was right. Alberts fizzled out while Dilfer had a solid, if not spectacular career and earned a Super Bowl ring as a starting QB.
The great point I figured out, even at very young age, is this – drafting players is a crap shoot and the best way not to “crap out” is by having the best information available.
I am a NFL draft junkie, but to be honest as analysts such as Kiper have become stars, a lot of their information has become watered down.
This is why I am here to tell you about an outstanding new draft website that will forever change the way fans will access information about college prospects.
DraftNasty.com is owned by former NFL Player Corey Chavous. Chavous was an all pro safety and standout during his 11 year career with the Cardinals, Vikings and Rams.
If you are a draft junkie like me you know that Chavous is no stranger to speaking about the NFL Draft. He was known as the premier draft expert among active players during his career, served as a draft host and analyst for the NFL Network, and sat in on ESPN’s draft panel several times.
What I always liked about Chavous was that there was absolutely no bias when he was breaking down a player. He was straight to the point and very thorough, and to be honest, I enjoyed hearing his assessments over the likes of Kiper and McShay.
The great thing about DraftNasty.com is that it offers 365 days a year of scouting service. Not only does the site focus on potential first round picks, but the expert scouts cover every single division in college football. DraftNasty.com gets deeper than most scouting services and brings to light potential gems that are otherwise overlooked by others.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Corey to get a clearer understanding of his vision and what he plans for the future of DraftNasty.com.
My main question was, why take the independent route as opposed to partnering with a major network like ESPN or the NFL Network?
Said Chavous, “I had many opportunities with television networks and even to become a scout for a few NFL teams, but in the end I felt I could make more of mark and put my stamp on scouting by starting something that I could own.”
DraftNasty.com does something very unique because Chavous has been going to different colleges campuses in a deluxe 37th RV to do live scouting of games and to interact with fans.
“That was totally my idea. We are trying to establish a name and a brand. What better way to do that then connecting with our core audience?” he said.
According to Chavous, his “goal is to provide true football fans with the details of what makes a great player. “On NFL draft day, the fans generally only know the big names, but smaller names fill out the teams, so I created Draftnasty.com to house all the info we accumulate as we scout players across the country.”
DraftNasty.com is a free service, so no subscription fees are required. It gives in depth break downs as well as interviews and on site live streams.
If you are into the NFL draft this site should be bookmarked immediately. Tell them BlackSportsOnline sent you.
