FBI Enters Marvin Harrison Case..GQ Backhanded Slap at Terrell Owens Sickening
You may have heard the buzz about a GQ Magazine featuring on Marvin Harrison.
I am not going to rehash the entire feature you can read it here, but it paints Harrison as the shooter in a April 29th incident where Harrison got into an argument outside of club Playmakers (Michael Irvin is not please) with Dwight Dixon.
Dixon as well as two others was hurt in the incident. Even though Harrison’s gun was believed to be the weapon in the case he was never charged. The police believed they had enough evidence in the case the DA thought otherwise.
On July 21st 2009 Mr. Dixon was shot and eventually died from his wounds. One gunman shot him while he was in his car. Ironically he was just a few blocks from Car Wash Harrison owned.
Dixon before his death always claimed that it was Harrison who shot at him in the April incident. Now the Philadelphia police have bought in the FBI to help them to see if the two shootings are linked according to ESPN.
A couple of things I want to point out.
First never judge a person’s character by what they do on the field of play. Unless you personally know them, you don’t know them.
When I say you know them, that doesn’t mean you are a groupie that means you are in their inner circle.
Not saying Marvin Harrison is “Frank Lucas”, but I repeatedly heard the media prop him up as the person you would want your “kids to grow up like”.
That is very irresponsible journalism. Make sure your preface that by saying “on the field”, because “off the field” you don’t know.
Speaking of irresponsible journalism while the GQ article as a whole is ok there is one part that is totally incorrigible on their part.
Read this quote:
“Marvin darnell harrison was not supposed to be this guy, the black athlete with a gun. Insecure, obnoxious, prone to acts of catharsis—that was Terrell Owens, Michael Vick. But Marvin?”
Besides trying to use big words like “catharsis” (which in layman terms means to act out emotionally) it directly implies that Terrell Owens and Michael Vick are to be seen as athletes who would are more prone to commit “attempted murder”.
The other seemed surprised that Harrison could commit such an act because of how he was “on the field”. It is obvious the writer has been brainwashed into thinking if you do a Touchdown dance you are criminal and if you hand the ball to the ref you are a saint.
Before getting to Vick, let me speak about T.O. for a minute.
Terrell Owens has never been accused, charged or had a hint of criminal activity in his life. The writer of the GQ article Jason Fagone seems to equate real life violence with football field emotions. This is one of the most asinine assumptions I have ever heard from a so called “real journalist”.
Go back and watch the wild card game last week between the Cardinals and Packers. From the 1st play Kurt Warner is yelling at everyone, should I automatically now consider that Warner is going to start busting caps?
And before you say:
“T.O. has a history.”
The only history has is of his on the field incidents being played out in the media more than your average player. His emotions and actions aren’t that much different than any other player it is just that he draws so much attention that anything he does is magnified.
To the casual reader it paints T.O. being some sort of thug and/or criminal which is 100% wrong.
As for Vick yes he is a criminal, but once again what does Dog Fighting have to do with trying to murder someone?
Why does it have to be the “Black Athlete with a gun”? Last time I check white athletes can carry guns too.
It was just a lazy job of journalism by Mr. Fagone and I hope someone calls him on it because he is just perpetuated a media stereotype that the black guy who talks a lot must be some sort of thug or criminal and the one who doesn’t talk is the “good black guy”.
The world doesn’t work like Mr. Fagone.

ummm the GQ article is fine. there you go trying to find racism in it. Yes, on the field you have an impression of a person and you can make assumptions based on that. You make assumptions in your tweets all day. It's not the black guy who talks a lot but the black guy who talks a lot has a bad attitude and is arrogant. Maybe you missed those parts of the T.O., Vick, and even Michael Irvin shows but I haven't. It is generally going to be assumed that if you act like an ass in a public forum as well as beg for the spotlight that you will be like that in your personal life. It is a very reasonable assumption. Sorry but no one did T.O. any harm could you please chill with trying to make him sympathetic. Maybe he has a stake in this site…
It was blantant what was said. In print and if you don't see it your head is in the sand
I appreciate your article.
So the only thing that you see is that he is black. Not that Those people they have used as examples had issues other than the fact they are black, then you are forcing it.
He said "Marvin darnell harrison was not supposed to be this guy, the black athlete with a gun. Insecure, obnoxious, prone to acts of catharsis—that was Terrell Owens, Michael Vick. But Marvin?”"
His words not mine. Nothing to force.
WHAT I GET FROM THIS IS DONT JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER … U NEVER KNOW WHO OR WHAT U ARE GETTING INTO WHEN U DONT TAKE TIME OUT & TRY TO FIGURE OUT OR UNDERSTAND A PERSON . YOU NEED TO DIG A LITTLE DEEPER THAN JUST WATCHING SOMEONE PLAY A GAME ….
Very nice article! good job for calling GQ on it. Is the magazine racist? prolly not. Was this interviewer racist? hopefully not. Did he have a racist moment? you betcha. There shouldn’t be any Black (or any race) athlete with a gun. Its SAD that this “Journalist” has that as a category for any person athlete or otherwise. Did they do a story on Tom Brady saying he wasn’t suppose to be the white athlete with 2 baby mommas? Tony Romo, or Jason Witten but not Tom Brady!!! Or how bout a story on how Ben Rothlesberger wasn’t supposed to be the white guy with the rape charge? Tony Romo, or Jason Witten but not Tom Brady!!! (guess who doesn’t like them cowboys) I applaud u for this article. Try sending it to Bossip or other websites to get more press.
Good piece.
Sports writers are lazy and use well known worn out stamps to label athletes….the "good ones" and the "bad guys" and up until recently the fans had no choice but to buy into these print and tv "perceptions" about who is who.
As the blogosphere expands and athletes can by-pass the "media" and deal directly with their fans, supporters and critics…the power of the sports media decreases everyday.
True sports fans were always able to make up their own minds about their favorite athletes anyway, regardless of what writers were feeding them. Barry Bonds was applauded continuously by his home team fans up until he stopped playing.
The fact that NOT one NFL team was interested in Marvin Harrison after the Colts cut him loose, let me know that there was a red flag there somewhere.
The lack of interest in Harrison had very little to do with this and more to do with the fact he was 37 years old with two bad knees. Anyone who saw him last season knew he lost a step and wasn't worth that ridiculous contract he had at that point. So the Colts let him go. As a Colts fan I hope this isn't true but if it is well Marvin should go to jail. I was never a big fan of his to begin with beyond what he did on the field nor do I think or suspect he was some sort of saint either because he played for my team I don't know the guy beyond what he does on the field.
But y'all don't understand; the NBA is the thug league!
Am I the only one who just doesn't see it that way? When I first read it I took it the way it was written. I think he was referring to Vick and Owens as players who are prone to insecurity, obnoxiousness, and acts of catharsis. Not that they are carrying guns. The fact that neither athlete mentioned has ever been connected with carrying guns, makes me think he was associating the three descriptive terms/phrases with Vick and Owens. If the author was going that route then a more obvious choice would have been Burress. I think this was a case of poor construction/organization rather than "a racist moment" or a swipe at Owens.
"Marvin darnell harrison was not supposed to be this guy, the black athlete with a gun. Insecure, obnoxious, prone to acts of catharsis—that was Terrell Owens, Michael Vick. But Marvin?”
At best, this is a poorly constructed sentence with gramatical errors and the author needs to take a refresher in writing. At worse, this is a sentence dropped like a bomb in the middle of the article, solely for the purpose of causing a hurricane in an otherwise article full of supposition and hearsay. I too read it as: NO! Not MARVIN! TO, Vick – I could see..but MARVIN? MARVIN HARRISON?? As if Marvin Darnell Harrison is not capable of being human (making bad choices, doing bad things, being in the wrong place at the wrong time or worse).
Maybe the author is trying to pick up on the ripple effect of Tiger Woods. Had another (type of) athlete been busted with 13 ho's – it wouldn't have been worldwide news, enough to shock anyone/everyone. But TIGER WOODS?? Mr Perfect himself???? SAY IT AINT SO!!!!!?!?!!. The problem with that is that is assumes, we the reader believe in such a thing (the perfect athlete) anymore.

Really good visual appeal on this site, I’d rate it 10 10.
Just recently read the article(im very late i kno), and I have to disagree with you Mr. Littal. Maybe we just read it differently, the statement: “Marvin darnell harrison was not supposed to be this guy, the black athlete with a gun. Insecure, obnoxious, prone to acts of catharsis—that was Terrell Owens, Michael Vick. But Marvin?”
To me the author was just stating the way Vick & T.O. are perceived by a lot of American people. I didnt take it as his position, but just the way they're portrayed by media and viewed by a lot of the public. Go read comments by regular people under any article on Vick or T.O. on espn or yahoo sports (and probably anywhere else). Those 2, and other athletes are called thugs, and many other negative names usually associated with black men. So, in my opinion, the statement by the author was 100% true, not based on his, yours, or my opinion, but the general public view of Vick and T.O.
FYI: im a black man who has defended Vick and T.O. and is fully aware that racism is still alive and kicking even wit Obama as president….

My husband and i were comfortable when Louis managed to do his analysis with the ideas he made out of your web site. It’s not at all simplistic to simply always be giving for free tricks that most people could have been trying to sell. Therefore we fully understand we now have the website owner to give thanks to for that. The explanations you’ve made, the straightforward site navigation, the friendships you will aid to instill – it’s got mostly awesome, and it’s really helping our son in addition to the family understand this theme is pleasurable, and that’s seriously vital. Thank you for the whole lot!
