Brett Favre: Surgery Or Retire
The NBA Playoffs are nearly ready to begin second-round action, so it’s only right that we talk about… Brett Favre. Everyone’s favorite gunslinger (boy, does he have FUN out there!) hasn’t made an official decision as to whether he’ll retire or not, but he may have gotten some help with that.
ESPN is reporting that Favre will require surgery on his left ankle in order to play for the Vikings this season. Coming off one of his finest seasons as a pro, if not the finest, advancing age and a distaste for surgery may force the iconic number 4 into retirement. Favre spoke on his conversation with Dr. James Andrews in an email:
“We have spoken,” Favre said. “To play again, I would need the surgery, as I suspected. This decision would be easy if not for my teammates and the fans and the entire Vikings staff. One year truly felt like 10 — much like Green Bay for many years. That’s what I was missing in my heart I suppose, a sense of belonging.”
While Favre is notorious for waffling, it’s widely accepted that it’s nothing more than a ploy to avoid training camp. This surgery will put a bit of pressure on him to be more upfront this go-round. Maybe now his Sundays will involve Wranglers and riding mowers instead of shoulder pads and smelling salts, but then again, it’s Favre. You never can be too sure.
