Looks like “Revis Island” will continue to have a population of 1. New York Jets defensive back Darrelle Revis says he plans to hold out with no end in sight. NYDailyNews.com is reporting that Revis is prepared to sit out training camp if a reworked deal can’t be agreed to by the start of training camp. Holding out could put Revis at risk of losing an accrued season towards free agency if he violates the 30-day rule, which means holding out past August 10. Revis isn’t budging.
Contract negotiations have not been going well since he has demanded a new contract. Part of this is due to posturing by both sides, as well as the uncertainty of what the new collective bargaining agreement will bring. Revis considers himself one of, if not the best cornerback in the NFL, and wants to be paid accordingly. What will really determine how much Revis feels he should get rests with one player, Peyton Manning.
Peyton Manning and the Colts are in the process of negotiating a new contract. Most within in the NFL believe this contract will make him the highest paid player in the NFL. Manning could get a $25 million a year deal. How does that impact Revis?
Insiders of the NFL explain that a top cornerback is usually paid 75-80% of what a top quarterback makes. If Manning lands a $25 million a year contract, Revis is justified in asking for $16 million, if he desires.
Another thing hindering the Revis/Jets negotiations is the fact that Manning/Colts talks are very slow going. This is also due to the aforementioned collective bargaining agreement.
The Jets had their eye on the Super Bowl this year; we’ll have to keep an eye on this situation to see if it derails that goal. If that doesn’t do it, I’m sure the curse of being on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” will be a factor.
