The Mets announced today that Francisco Rodriguez has a torn ligament in his right thumb, with the team acknowledging the injury is related to his alleged assault last week.
After complaining about pain in the thumb on Sunday, Rodriguez remained in New York for an MRI exam which revealed the tear.
Team doctors recommend surgery, a date for which has not been determined. It likely would end Rodriguez’s season.
Rodriguez was charged with assaulting his girlfriend’s father after a game at Citi Field last Wednesday. A police spokesman said then Rodriguez “repeatedly hit him in the face and hit his head against a wall.”
