Lebron James on His Detractors: “Fans are Emotional, They Need to Get Over It”
The King of South Beach isn’t saying anything incorrect.
Fans are emotional and especially for the city of Cleveland it is time to move on. Lebron is not coming back, he doesn’t want to come back and no matter how many jerseys you burn it doesn’t change the fact he has taken his talents elsewhere.
The problem of course is how Lebron’s delievers his message, check out the quotes:
“If I was a fan and I was on the outside looking in, I could be upset a little bit if one of my favorite players left,” James said. “Or if I felt like he betrayed us or whatever the case may be. But you have to get over it.”
“Sports are very emotional and fans are very emotional,” James said. “At times they really believe you may be related to them you and you sleep in their house. When you do something wrong and you leave their house they can become very emotional. I’ve understood that over the years. But at the same time, you have to understand you have to do what is best yourself.”
What athletes need to understand is sometimes it isn’t what you say, it is how you say it.
What Lebron is saying is accurate, but it comes across as uppity, as if he is on some different level than the fans.
Money and fame are great, but at your core you have to remember that being able to dunk a ball isn’t any more important than being a plumber.
You maybe be perceived differently, but you need to understand that people like to be treated with respect and not patted on the head. When you catch the disease of “believing your own press clippings” your grasp on reality slips goes away.
You don’t want to speak like you are literally a “King”, cool nickname, but this isn’t England.
I appreciate Lebron’s honesty and maybe he doesn’t care that people see him as a bit of a snob, but in my opinion he would do better long term for himself if he stop talking as if we are his “subjects”.
I honestly think if he could be carried out on a throne during introductions he would.
While his points are valid, his delivery was as effective as a George W. Bush speech on Nuclear physics.
