The Eagles are playing their hand properly.
You want to make sure that Michael Vick wasn’t just a one hit wonder, can stay out of trouble and be dedicated to his craft, so it wouldn’t be wise to hand him a long term contract until he can prove himself for another year.
With Kevin Kolb, it can’t hurt to listen to offers because if someone is throws a “Hershel Walker Package” at them, you have to take it and fill the glaring holes on your team.
ESPN has the details:
The Philadelphia Eagles will make it official next month and place their franchise tag on quarterback Michael Vick, a league source has confirmed.
What’s just as significant about the move is that, by tagging Vick, the Eagles then will entertain offers for backup Kevin Kolb, who is sure to generate more interest this offseason than any other available quarterback once there is a new collective bargaing agreement.
There are a lot of teams desprarte for a quarterback and I think that Kolb is a viable candidate. The question begs what is his trade value. The Eagles will surely want a 1st round draft pick and I don’t know if Kolb is worth that much, but if you are a team like the Vikings, 49ers or Cardinals where a quarterback could make the difference in your playoff chances next year do you pull the trigger?
Even though Kolb has ever right to want to get out of Philadelphia, I think the prudent thing for the Eagles to do is would keep him because there is still an unknown with Vick, especially in regards to his ability to stay healthy.
Unless a team came with a package that was just too good to pass up, I would expect both Vick and Kolb to be a part of Gang Green next year.
