When the initial reports of Duerson’s death came out the cause of death was “unknown”.
That normally isn’t good and today we found that that Duerson did indeed commit suicide, here are the details.
Former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson, whose body was found Thursday in Sunny Isles, Fla., was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest and asked that his brain be used for research, NBC Chicago reported Saturday.
The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner ruled his death a suicide, the television station reported. The Chicago Tribune also reported that Duerson died by his own hand, citing a “source with knowledge of the situation.”
Duerson, 50, was a four-time Pro Bowl selection who spent most of his 11-year NFL career with the Chicago Bears, playing a key role in their Super Bowl run during the 1985 season. He won a second Super Bowl with the New York Giants following the 1990 season, then retired after spending three seasons with the Cardinals.
Duerson, NBC Chicago reported, sent a text message to his family asking that his brain be donated for research and asking specifically that the “left side” be examined.
A lot of people will try to connect the dots and say this has something to do with Duerson’s NFL career, but that is such a hard thing to judge.
At this point we should just give prayers to his family and friends.
