There are just some things that you shouldn’t use as an analogy.
Slavery is one of them.
Slaves had no union, they couldn’t decertify, if they went to court, if you tried to test “free agency” as slaved that usually ended up with you being hung to a tree and they definitely weren’t making millions of dollars to play a game.
Here is the entire quote from AP.
It’s modern-day slavery, you know? People kind of laugh at that, but there are people working at regular jobs who get treated the same way, too. With all the money … the owners are trying to get a different percentage, and bring in more money. I understand that; these are business-minded people. Of course this is what they are going to want to do. I understand that; it’s how they got to where they are now. But as players, we have to stand our ground and say, ‘Hey — without us, there’s no football.’ There are so many different perspectives from different players, and obviously we’re not all on the same page — I don’t know. I don’t really see this going to where we’ll be without football for a long time; there’s too much money lost for the owners. Eventually, I feel that we’ll get something done.
But this crazy idea about an 18-game season … I’m sure they want more entertainment and more revenue, but we’re not going to see a pinch of that (the increased revenue), and it’s just the business we’re in.
There is nothing wrong with the comment except using slavery to illustrate it.
Adrian Peterson signed a six year, 40 million dollar deal with 17 million dollars of that guaranteed when he entered the league. Adrian Peterson knows nothing what it is like to be a slave.
It is ignorant comments like this, that makes it hard for the average fan to understand why the players are fighting so hard for a fair deal.
I do believe the owners are asking for too much, but don’t cut yourself out at the knees, by playing the “slaves” card, you aren’t suffering, you aren’t a slave and at any time you don’t like you slave life in the NFL you can go play in Canada or retire.
Think before you speak, use your brain it is a tool.
