Kimbo Slice’s road to fighting fame and fortune didn’t go exactly as planned. The one-time internet sensation, who made his name fighting guys in parking lots got his world rocked once he stood toe-to-toe with other professional fighters. Since then, no one has heard too much from the man ordinarily known as Kevin Ferguson. But his promoters have a new idea to get Kimbo back into the spotlight. Pick on a professional football player.
Jared Shaw recently told MMAWeekly Radio that he’s put out the call to set up a fight between Kimbo and Minnesota Vikings defensive end-turned-boxer Ray Edwards.
“I’ll tell you right now on the air, I’ve called Mike Riley to get in touch with Ray Edwards’ people and I’ve made an open challenge to come fight Kimbo Slice. That fight I will deliver,” Shaw said in an appearance on MMAWeekly Radio.
“If Ray Edwards wants to step up and fight Kimbo Slice I will deliver that to the public. There’s two guys that come from athletic backgrounds, that haven’t been in the ring that many times, so let’s see two big boys bang it out. If Ray Edwards thinks he’s a great boxer, then maybe he thinks he can go through Kevin Ferguson very quickly.”
To this point, Edwards hasn’t responded. It could be because he’s busy getting ready for his boxing debut on Friday night against former kickboxer T.J. Gibson. But it could be a match-up we see in the future if Edwards is serious about his claims that he’ll focus on boxing if the Vikings don’t show him the money.
