It’s not the fight everyone wants, but it could be a step in the right direction. Days after stories surfaced that Floyd Mayweather, Jr. turned down $65 million to fight Manny Pacquiao in Singapore, Pretty Boy Floyd says via Twitter that he’s made a date to step back in the ring.
My fans have been waiting long enough. Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz. Sept-17 2011 for the WBC World Championship.
Mayweather hasn’t fought since winning a unanimous decision over Shane Mosley on May 1, 2010. Since then, Floyd has been busy working on some of his various legal issues. The long layoff likely meant that Mayweather was going to need a tune-up fight before any possible matchup with Pacquiao.
Ortiz won a unanimous decision in a very entertaining fight with Andre Berto back in April and will try to give Mayweather his first career loss. Of course, a lot can happen between now and September. And whether it means we really are closer to a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is anyone’s guess.
