Since NFL players wouldn’t be getting paid during any time missed during the lockout, it means that some of the hangers-on and ne’er-do-wells that attempt to leech off of them will have a tough time trying to live the life they’ve become accustomed to. For instance, take Shelley Anne David, the Tennessee woman who reportedly tried to extort Titans wide receiver Damian Williams.
“Damian Williams, in the presence of detectives, placed a phone call to Shelley David this morning and arranged for a meeting,’’ Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said. “David received a $5,000 cashier’s check from Williams and gave him a signed note saying she would not appear in any court proceedings against him. At that point she was taken into custody.”
The incident began when Williams, David and others returned to Williams’ apartment after an evening at a nightclub. David alleges that she received bruises on her arm after Williams grabbed her during an argument. After misdemeanor assault charges were filed against Williams, police learned that David had been sending him text messages saying she would not press charges in exchange for payment.
Fortunately for Williams, he was able to resolve the issue without being taken advantage of. But it stands as a reminder for anyone who has come into recent fame or fortune that there are plenty of people looking to get over on you.
