Derek Jeter’s on the verge of picking up his 3,000th career hit – making him only the 28th player in the history of baseball to ever achieve that feat. And according to HBO and Major League Baseball Productions, that’s worthy of a documentary.
The special will air within weeks of Jeter accomplishing the career milestone and will include access to the baseball pro on and off the field, as well as exclusive interviews with him in the days following his 3000th hit.
“It has been a lot of fun working with HBO Sports and MLB Productions to capture this milestone in a special and unique way,” Jeter says. “Hopefully fans will enjoy getting to see a sneak peek at the journey.”
The special will also include new interviews with his family, friends, Yankees executives, teammates, and famous fans including Hal Steinbrenner, Brian Cashman,Joe Girardi, Joe Torre, Curtis Granderson, Mariano Rivera, Dave Winfield, Minka Kelly, and Billy Crystal.
Depending when filming began, the documentary could include some of Jeter’s rehab stint in the minors, which should make an interesting storyline – especially if they have footage of Jeter wearing the world’s ugliest uniform. Of course, if you hate the Yankees, then the continued promotion of all things Pinstripes will be one more reason for you to rail against The Evil Empire.
