Plaxico Burress, two months removed from being released from jail, was rumored to be going back to one of his former teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers or the New York Giants. Then today, it was announced that he had signed a 1 year deal with the New York Jets.

The deal is for $3.017 fully guaranteed (the 17 presumably a nod to his jersey number) and reunites him with former teammate Santonio Holmes.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s twitter feed, Burress told the Philadelphia Eagles that if they met his contract demands he would sign with them. While the Eagles pondered the offer, the Jets swooped in and gave him what he wanted.

The signing presumably closes the door on the return of Braylon Edwards to the Jets. With the signings of Michael Jenkins by the Vikings, Mike Sims-Walker by the Rams and Chad Ochocinco to the Patriots, I think Edwards will sign with division rival Miami. Even though he was spurned by the franchise in the 2005 draft (he thought he was going there, but Miami took Ronnie Brown instead), it was a different regime and he feels the Jets have spurned him this time around.

You also can not discount the fact that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is a University of Michigan man who has a penchant for Michigan men.

The deal also closes the door on Randy Moss to the Jets. I expect him to go to the Steelers, and organization that can handle his special brand of diva, especially in light of the Hines Ward injury.
