Tiger Woods ended his partnership with his caddie Steve Williams today after a 12 years of service. Williams was Woods’ caddie for 13 of his 14 major championships.
Woods released a statement today on his website saying, “I want to express my deepest gratitude to Stevie for all his help, but I think it’s time for a change. Stevie is an outstanding caddie and a friend and has been instrumental in many of my accomplishments. I wish him great success in the future.”
Williams was a caddy for Adam Scott while Tiger was injured and developed pretty good chemistry with the Australian golfer. Williams released a statement on his website after the announcement was made.
“After 13 years of loyal service needless to say this came as a shock. Given the circumstances of the past 18 months working through Tiger’s scandal, a new coach and with it a major swing change and Tiger battling through injuries I am very disappointed to end our very successful partnership at this time. I have had the opportunity to work of late for Australian Adam Scott and will now caddy for him on a permanent basis.”
Williams has shared special moments with Woods, embracing each other after Woods had won the 2006 British Open following the death of his father Earl Woods. Woods hugged Williams after the winning put rolled in and sobbed on the caddies shoulder. Some say a change was imminent since golfers and their caddies usually don’t stay with each other throughout the golfer’s career.
Williams is known by some as the best caddies ever, but how much could you screw up carrying around a bag? No word yet on who Williams’ replacement will be for Woods.
