The NFL and NFL Charities are donating $1 million towards the new memorial for Martin Luther King Jr. on Washington’s National Mall.
The monument, which was was scheduled to be dedicated Sunday, which marks the 48th anniversary of his ”I Have a Dream” speech. The ceremony has been postponed to the fall , due to Hurricane Irene.
The contribution from the league and NFL Charities will help the foundation behind the memorial to reach its goal of raising $120 million.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says:
So 1,000,000 / 20,000 in “fines” = 50 guys that Goodell is gonna fine 20K for clean hits that he’ll claim are dirty.
But seriously, Professional footbal the ultimate meritocracy where players are measured strictly by their performance on the field?
Not quite Goodell. But nice try.
If that was the case, you wouldn’t have NFL Owner, Jerry Richardson, telling Cam Newton that he couldn’t have tattoos and piercings.
Or ESPN, a partner of the NFL, running stories titled “What if Michael Vick were white?”, with him photoshopped in “white face”.
(BSO Rebuttal here)
And finally, Black Sports Online wouldn’t need to exist to offer a diverse perspective on the NFL, or sports in general.
But I digress.
The donation was a nice gesture in honor of a man who helped make headway towards the “inclusive environment” Goodell speaks of. I’m just not quite convinced its the “ultimate meritocracy”.
