Mark Sanchez has been in GQ several times going back to his college days at USC. Not really a big deal, but what I found interesting about the article isn’t the awful clothes he is wearing, but the insight on how furious he was at Rex Ryan telling the media he thought about benching him last year.
A lot of quarterbacks get annoyed when their coach doesn’t show confidence in them, but not many would react like this.
In the September issue of GQ, the Big Apple’s newest matinee idol admits he “wanted to fight” Ryan after the coach told the press he considered benching the starter in favor of Mark Brunell last season.
The near-confrontation happened after losses to the Patriots and the Dolphins in early December. Sanchez actually pushed Brunell out of a practice huddle at one point, and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer had to talk him out of escalating with Ryan. “I wanted to fight him,” Sanchez tells GQ. “I was really mad.”
That’s what you want to see out of your starting quarterback. Sanchez numbers have been pedestrian in his first two years in the league, but being a quarterback sometimes isn’t about stats.
Sanchez has a moxie and confidence about him that makes people believe he can lead the Jets to the Super Bowl.
Moxie can only get you so far though, he has to improve his accuracy if the Jets are to take that next step. He isn’t lacking in weapons, so it is time to show he can be an elite quarterback in the NFL.
