As I stated on Twitter Bob Arum is like the McRib.
1% authentic meat and 99% processed BS.
I learned a long time ago to never put too much stock in what a Boxing promoter says, it is in their DNA to lie. Arum has a long standing feud going with Floyd Mayweather, so take anything he says about Floyd with a grain of salt.
For those who aren’t aware Arum use to promote Mayweather. Arum had a fight scheduled with Mayweather and Antonio Margarito, but Mayweather paid Arum $750k to get out from under his contract it was the best move Mayweather has ever made. He started to promote himself and has made over $200 million in boxing purses since then without having to split any of the money with a promoter.
That is why Bob Arum is salty. Here is what he had to say about the fight and then I will tell you what is really going on.
“That fight will never, ever happen,” Arum said. “Ever, ever happen because of Mayweather.
“When Mayweather talks about how he hates Top Rank he’s talking bulls—. What Mayweather hates is Manny’s right hand. Mayweather has no chin and Manny will knock him out. Pacquiao and Mayweather is a three or four-round fight. Period. And who knows that best? Mayweather. The one thing Mayweather has had throughout his career is he knows boxing. He understands boxing and Mayweather can not compete with Manny. It’s the right hand of Manny that is preventing that fight from happening. If Manny agreed just to jab with the right hand the fight would be made in 30 seconds.”
A couple of things should be pointed out.
Mayweather isn’t Roy Jones, I have seen live and in person Mayweather take some solid shots from some big punchers and by in large he has dealt with them pretty well.
Pacquiao does have power to knock people down and beat people up, but beyond putting Ricky Hatton to sleep, against true Welterweights he hasn’t been able to knock anyone out with one punch power. Not De La Hoya, not Clottey, not Cotto, not Margarito and not Mosley. A part of that is after being beat up some of those fighters chose not to engage, but none were just taking out by one punch.
It isn’t a question of fear on anyone’s part. It comes down to money, risk and control. Simply put, I don’t Mayweather has an issue with Pacquiao or Freddie Roach, he doesn’t want to put money in Arum’s pocket when he can keep that money to himself.
It sucks for the fans and to be honest with both Mayweather and Pacquiao getting up their in age, the allure of the fight is starting to lose some steam.
I personally don’t feel it is going to happen, so I stopped worrying about it a long time ago, I suggest you do the same.
