What exactly is this fine for?
He wasn’t taunting.
He got a penalty for falling to the ground not the dance.
In the NFL is having a lack of class or doing something in bad taste a finable offense now? While you mull that over here are the details.
Bills receiver Stevie Johnson has been fined $10,000 by the NFL for his touchdown celebration against the Jets last week, a person with knowledge of the fine confirmed. That person requested anonymity because the league has not announced the amount of the fine.
Johnson drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during the game after excessively celebrating in the end zone after scoring a 5-yard touchdown in the first half. Johnson first mocked Jets receiver Plaxico Burress’ self-shooting incident, mimicking shooting himself in the leg. He then imitated receiver Santonio Holmes’ “Flight Boys” jet plane move and crashed into the turf.
I find it funny the Jets and specifically Rex Ryan have an issue with Johnson. The same Ryan who himself just was fined for cursing at a fan and is the poster boy for borderline classless comments.
The reason Johnson should appeal is because there have been many players who have “mocked” other players or events in their TD celebrations and to my understanding none of them have been fined.
I am about consistency and being fair. Would a player be fined if he scored on the Eagles and started barking in the end zone? If a player scored against the Steelers and started to sexually assault the goalpost would they be fined?
Furthermore, and I think this is the real question you should ask yourself.
If Stevie Johnson catches the winning touchdown pass does Bob Costas get on his soapbox and would the NFL have dropped $10k on Johnson?
I think you know the answer to that.
