Every once in awhile I’m asked to speak to journalism students about the New Age Media world that we live in now. The one point that I always try to drive home to them is this.
Believe nothing and believe everything.
I get some curious looks, but then I explain one of the keys to success in this industry is never dismiss anything completely and never believe anything completely. You have to think about situations critically and then make an informed opinion, no matter how wild the accusation.
Scott Rabb is the author of The Whore of Akron. Just off that title you might want to dismiss these claims against Maverick Carter, Lebron James’ right hand man. But take a look at them via Deadspin.
A national NBA reporter told me he’d heard—but had never been able to confirm—that the Delonte-Gloria muck had been the brainchild of LeBron’s manager and partner, Maverick Carter.
I dismissed that as ludicrous, until one day during last season’s Finals, when I heard Chris Broussard and Stephen A. Smith—two of Mav Carter’s go-to guys—on ESPN2 talking about off-court issues hurting LeBron’s play. It was just that vague until later that day, when the intertubes began to fill with stories about a dalliance between Savannah Brinson, the mother of LeBron’s two sons, and Rashard Lewis.
Is it possible that Lebron’s management started these rumors to take the heat off Lebron’s poor play during critical moments during the playoffs?
On the surface you would think no one would take it to that level, except I heard the same thing in regard to the Rashard Lewis and Savannah Brinson situation.
Even though that rumor was totally ridiculous someone I trust said it was Lebron’s team who started it.
I never thought the Delonte West and Gloria James thing was true, just more humorous and if it was Lebron’s team that floated it out there. it backfired of the highest degree.
There is so much going behind the scenes that all I can do is refer you to these Jay Z lines when you are trying to figure out who athletes really are when no one is around.
They’re all actors
Looking at themselves in the mirror backwards
Can’t even face themselves, don’t fear no rappers
They’re all weirdos, DeNiro’s in Practice
So don’t believe everything your earlobe captures
Its mostly backwards
Unless it happens to be as accurate as me
And everything said in song you happen to see
Then actually, believe half of what you see
None of what you hear even if its spat by me
And with that said, I will kill n*ggas dead
