On Saturday night, Ronda Rousey beat Miesha Tate to capture the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Championship. A lot of people didn’t think Rousey should have been the number one contender, but she basically talked her way into it and then backed it up.
The judo specialist (she captured the bronze at the Beijing Olympics) not only beat Tate, she snapped her arm like a Slim Jim. (Ohhhhh Yeahhhhhh!)
Her fifth victory was also her fifth armbarm victory. This is what it looked like.
In the build up to the fight, she jabbed at Tate’s boyfriend (UFC Fighter Ryan Caraway) that she could compete with men, which prompted this response.
“If [Rousey] wants to challenge a man I’ll knock her teeth [down] her throat [then] break her arm!”
As you can imagine, this got him into a little bit of hot water for the way he phrased it. Rousey took it with a grain of salt and unleashed her own ether in an interview with Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com.
“It’s a free country, you can say whatever you want,” Rousey said. “He’s probably not that smart. I mean, what a way to make yourself look like a retard, to say women can’t compete with men on the same level in any sport, and to say he wanted to knock my teeth down my throat. I don’t think he needs to be reprimanded because I think anyone that saw that has reprimanded him enough. He’s done enough harm on his own making himself look like an idiot that I don’t think anyone else needs to step in.”
“Of course I can [compete with him], dude. Who is he? You never heard of him if it wasn’t for Miesha. He’s just some dude. He’s not even like a legit fighter. He’s just some random guy that likes fighting.”
Damn. She dropped a “you never heard of this guy if it wasn’t for his girlfriend” and a “not a legit fighter”.
For her part, Rousey is considered one of the best judo specialists in all of MMA (man or woman) and it is said she can use throws to take just about anybody off their feet. Factor in that she is pretty sports hot and the fact that Gina Carano left to make movies, its stands to reason that she is going to be making a lot of money off her fighting skill and her looks.
