All rookies in every sport should be required to see this documentary. “Broke,” a ESPN documentary directed by Billy Corben, is a part of ESPN “30 for 30 Vol. II” which is scheduled to be released in October.

The documentary “digs into the psychology of men whose competitive nature carries them to victory on the field and ruin off it.” It features retired stars like Keith McCants, Bernie Kosar, Leon Searcy and Andre Rison, as well as commentary from Marvin Miller, the former executive director of the MLB Players Association, Bart Scott of the New York Jets and many others.

Below is a synopsis of the documentary.

According to a 2009 Sports Illustrated article, 60 percent of NBA players are broke within five years of retirement. For 78 percent of NFL players, it takes only three years. Sucked into bad investments, stalked by freeloaders, saddled with medical problems, and naturally prone to showing off, most pro athletes get shocked by harsh economic realities after years of living the high life. Drawing surprisingly vulnerable confessions from retired stars like Jamal Mashburn, Bernie Kosar, and Andre Rison, as well as Marvin Miller, the former executive director of the MLB Players Association, this fascinating documentary digs into the psychology of men whose competitive nature carries them to victory on the field and ruin off it.

With athletes like Terrell Owens claiming to be broke and former NFL running back Jamal Lewis in court today for a bankruptcy court hearing, this documentary should be a lesson for newly professional athletes on how to manage their money properly.

You don’t want to be another Andre Rison, who declared bankruptcy in 2007 and was indicted by a federal grand jury last year for failure to pay child support charges. Or Keith McCants, who confessed in a 2011 interview that he wished he “never had any money.”

Or another T.O.

  1. No tears here. Many if not most of the Black people involved have been misguided in believing in the virtues of WHITE WORLD. They go to White schools…marry White women…and partner themselves with White business companions. They are what many were in grade school and college…ignorant fools.

The lesson for those coming up is this: support Black colleges with your talent…marry Black women…and major in business so you can handle your own damn money!

    • Paul bennett:
If I am not mistaken paul, you are basically asking for segregation all over again? (not casting stones here) It just sounds like from you’re article, that you want white and black folks to be segregated???
Instead of all that, How about the black athletes stop crying I’s Broke cuz the white devil took’s all mah money crap…. if alot of the brothers would keep their fly zipped shut or use protection, the sisters would not be screamin about their 5 different “babies daddies”
some of the white music stars and athlete’s are just as bad but, it is the black world that shoves it right out there….Hey I’m busted broke, I bought $10 million dollar homes, drove $500 thousand dollar cars, Bought a ton of “bling-Bling” and I make it “rain” at every booty bar from texas to florida, NY, hot lanta….I carry hand guns into nite clubs and shoot my own self in the leg….
I cry not fair, the Po-Po is dissing me cuz I am black, But here is the real deal Paul….
EVERY MAN today has an opportunity to succeed….I came from a real poor crime infested area my self….I am not rich by no means but I chose to AVOID TROUBLE and leave the people that were NO GOOD FOR ME and make something of my self…by the way, I never went to college.
Stop blaming the white community for what happened 150 yrs ago, If a black man wants to partner with white folks, whats wrong with that? both sides needs to know who they are with and there should be a trust on both sides as well as legal protection also on both sides to minimize damage.
Every race is prejudiced to a certain degree paul, whom ever does NOT THINK THEIR RACE IS SUPERIOR has no pride… It is how you conduct you’re self though is what counts….if you have black or white friends, in general, you dont say, well, I got this black/white friend….they are either a friend or not a friend, unless you are fixing them up with some one of another race then you say well my friend is black/white….I will agree with you on one aspect of you’re post, educate you’re self, and learn how to handle you’re own money!
But for the love of god stop playing the race card it is old and redundant, and stop blaming the white world for all of you’re short comings and do something about it!

  2. Paul, Cmon Man!! why does it have to be about BLACK and WHITE? There is no need to play the blame game nor give these grown adults excuses for there BAD choices, If i make a mistake i dont go off and blame the WHITE MAN for my poor choices and i surely dont expect you to do it for me
im proud of my heritage, and we all should be.
But what someone else does (black or white) makes no difference to me.What happened 100 years ago wasnt cool, but im pretty sure all the guilty people from then are gone, lets move on!
Threre are just as many WHITES struggling as there are BLACKS..
And i dont see a UNITED HONKY COLLEGE FUND out there.

  3. Wow! I am NOT surprised, though, as I had learned of these trends/statistics before this documentary. I have no pity or sympathy for fools. A fool and his money soon part ways. You will either come into the NFL and NBA as a rookie who listens to the sound advice and wisdom of those who are trying to help you and learn from those who came before you OR you will learn the hard way.

The risky investments. . . stop with the greed. In some cases, though, it is just bad luck.

The child support. . . Learn some discipline and self-control you incontinent fool! You think that woman wants to spend her life with you? You fool, you are nothing more special than the other billions of men on this Earth except the fact that you have the paper she wants. . . and I am NOT talking about a marriage certificate.

Why on Earth are you wasting money and “making it rain” to the tune of thousands of dollars just to see some naked women dance for you in a strip club? WTF? You have got to be kidding me. Why waste money like that? You are better off walking down the street and giving to someone. Idiots!

It is lame to pay for sex. . . . This is how even some of the most repugnant looking athletes get it, though, I guess. Still lame to pay for sex. . .

    Fools!
