One thing about being an athlete is that you just don’t have to worry about your own actions, but also the actions of your family and friends.
The reason I didn’t originally write about this story is that it doesn’t have to do with Devin Hester. He shouldn’t be held accountable for the actions of his cousin, but since Devin decide to speak out on the matter it became relevant to report on.
“It affects family members,” Devin Hester told the Chicago Tribune. “I always have my cousins come to help me, to work in the camp. It helps me and at the same time kind of puts a little money in their pockets. So, three days later, after he left, that incident happened. It is very shocking to me. It does take a toll on the family, but at the same time some of my family down there, I hate to say this, but that is just the life they live. And, you know, you try to be a role model with the situation I am in, playing football. But sometimes people are stuck in an environment where they can’t get out. It’s just the worst situation that he is in and a bad decision that he made.”
Here is what happened according to the official police report.
Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the early morning shooting of a man who was inside a vehicle that was northbound on I-95 on July 4.
Four people were inside the green Kia Soul when, somewhere between Sunrise Boulevard and Sample Road, Bevins Bennett, 20, was shot. The driver of the vehicle drove Bennett to the emergency room at North Broward Medical Center, where the shooter got out of the car and fled on foot.
The shooter has been identified as Antoinne Hester, 22. The motive of the shooting is under investigation.
Has to be tough on Devin and his entire family, which is why his cousin needs to turn himself in and take responsibility for his actions.
