Originally, I defended Joe Paterno.
Not because I thought he didn’t deserve some blame about what happened at Penn State, but because I thought people were losing focus on the true monster Jerry Sandusky.
After reading through this document it is clear that Penn State and Joe Paterno had a 100% knowledge of what Sandusky was doing and just ignored it to protect themselves and the University.
Not at one time did they think about the children that were involved.
The report concluded that Paterno, president Graham Spanier, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz “failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade.”
“In order to avoid the consequences of bad publicity, the most powerful leaders at the university — Spanier, Schultz, Paterno and Curley — repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky’s child abuse,” the report said.
Sexual abuse might have been prevented if university officials had banned him from bringing children onto campus after a 1998 inquiry, the report said. Despite their knowledge of the police probe into Sandusky showering with a boy in a football locker room, Spanier, Paterno, Curley and Schultz took no action to limit his access to campus, the report said.
Joe Paterno did a lot of great things for Penn State and he isn’t alive to defend himself, but this will haunt his legacy forever.
He had a chance to do the right thing, but from the emails that were exposed to now this document it is clear he knew Sandusky was a child molester and didn’t just ignore it, but actively covered it up.
Sad day for Penn State.
