I had a very brief conversation with Tim Tebow at last year’s Super Bowl in Indianapolis. I told him that he can’t slip up because there are many people just waiting for him to fail.
I wasn’t talking about on the field, but off the field. There are people who just dislike him because they think he is too perfect and miserable people don’t like that. They can’t separate the on the field from the off the field. On the field Tebow’s has his failings, but what Tebow’s detractors want is a failing off the field.
There are many who think Tebow is Eddie Haskell. I can only go by what I see and he hasn’t done anything to suggest he isn’t sincere in his beliefs.
I have always pointed out that it isn’t his fault the gets he attention he does. It is your fault, because if didn’t care about Tim Tebow ESPN wouldn’t be throwing birthday parties for him on Sportscenter.
But, when you are on such a high pedestal the smallest things can make people go off. Case in point.
Craig Carton, host of the Boomer & Carton radio show on Sports Radio 66 WFAN, crucified Tebow, the famously religious NFL star whose on-field genuflections proved to be the perfect ingredient for a Tebowmania, for his Sexy Jesus pose during the morning show, calling him “fraudulent,” “disgusting” and “egotistical.”
Tim Tebow is posing as Jesus, but not any kind of Jesus. He is posing as ‘Sexy Jesus.’ Now, I’m not a very religious guy, but I do know the tenets of religion and I know what Jesus stood for and I know that many people that believe in that stuff, right, and live their life by that code take that very seriously… But I can tell you that hardcore, conservative, religious people that believe in Jesus and fear God… When you see a guy, who clearly thinks he is Jesus — he is posing as Jesus, legs crossed, arms out, like he’s on the freaking cross, and he’s got tight junk pants on showing off his big junk with no shirt on — and he’s posing as Sexy Jesus, he is a fraud.
The radio host went on to say, “He gets it, he plays the role. He’s typically very, very sincere and very, very consistent about who he is and what his beliefs are. You just saw a little inkling into what he thinks of himself.”
The photos themselves are old, from when Tebow was at Florida.
I don’t see anything wrong with them. Just because he is a Christian doesn’t mean he can’t take his shirt off. I think people overreacted, but that is the point.
When you are under that spotlight people don’t tend to be rational. Try not to get burned Backup Jesus.
