Billy Gillispie is out of the Mayo Clinic, a little less stress in his life, and now he’s out of a job.
According to the USA Today, Gillispie resigned as head basketball coach of the Red Raiders.
Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt released a statement on the matter.
“Billy has decided to focus on his health, and we wish him a full recovery,” Hocutt said in a news release on the school’s athletics website. “We are proud of the young men he has brought to this campus. Billy’s decision allows him to concentrate on his well-being and allows us to turn our attention to preparations for the upcoming season.”
Gillispie has come under fire in recent weeks regarding allegations that he mistreated his players. He was reprimanded for practicing for extended hours over the allowed time. He was alleged to have made players cry, berated them, and disrespected them.
Earlier this month Gillispie had been reprimanded in a letter from the athletic director in which he was told he had a total disregard of rules and people.
