This is at the very least, an extremely interesting tactic.
Rams head coach Jeff Fisher knows that his team has an extremely tough match-up this week against the Green Bay Packers. Specifically, he knows he needs to do everything in his power to keep his quarterback Sam Bradford upright and not the victim of countless sacks by one Clay Matthews. The coach is taking the task so seriously, that he has taken a rather odd approach to prepping his team.
Fisher had practice squad member Sammy Brown don a blonde wig in Wednesdays practice to help prepare the Rams offense for what they will deal with in Matthews.
Per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Fisher was quoted as saying, “I’ve done that in the past, particularly with Troy Polamalu. When you’re playing great players like Polamalu and Matthews, you like to know where they are on the field, and that helps.”
Defensive end Chris Long added, “ I thought it was pretty cool. Clay’s are a little bit more flowy. But I almost thought it was Clay Matthews.”
The wig wearer himself Sammy Brown simply remarked, “I had to take it off. That thing was burning my face.”
We’ll see if this actually helps the Rams block Clay Matthews. Checking in at second in the league with 8 sacks, they will need all the help they can get.
