Andre Berto has a lot of heart, but the facts are he never developed into the superstar fighter he was once touted to be.
He has lost his last two fights and in between those been caught using PEDs. Berto’s issues are he lacks discipline and only knows how to fight one way.
The way he fights is exciting, but when he has stepped up in competition he has failed. Victor Ortiz out slugged him in route to a win and tonight Robert Guerrero put him on the canvas twice on his way to a hard-fought unanimous decision.
Berto tried to execute the famed Floyd Mayweather shoulder roll defense, but if you ever wondered why Floyd (and now Adrien Broner) is so good at it, but others aren’t now you know. Guerrero took advantages of the openings to quickly closed both of Berto’s eyes to the point he was fighting blind for the majority of the fight.
Berto gets credit for having a huge heart and making the fight competitive. He scored with some vicious uppercuts, but nothing could stop Guerrero’s assault.
Guerrero might have fought his way into a spring bout with Floyd Mayweather. It is something he has chased for two years, but was missing a signature win to justify it, but he has it now. Floyd forever the opportunist might see this as easy money against an opponent in his prime. Either way Guerrero is in line for an even bigger payday against a named opponent next time out.
As far a Berto, he showed enough in the fight to probably get another high-profile HBO fight, but eventually he is going to have to start winning or he will be relegated to ESPN 17.
