The Eagles season as we all know has been an absolute disaster.
Andy Reid has been forced to fire his defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, and last night he fired defensive line coach Jim Washburn.
Earlier I reported on Washburn being upset about Jason Babin being released, and Eagles players disliking Washburn giving Babin special treatment.
Reuben Frank of Comcast Sports Net Philly has some more rather startling details into the relationship with the defense as a whole, and it’s not pleasant.
According to Frank and Multiple sources, Washburn and Castillo did not get along, and Washburn would openly disrespect Juan Castillo.
Frank is reporting that an Eagles defensive player told him that Washburn would either ignore Castillo or confront him in a condescending manner in when speaking to him.
That same player said Washburn would openly call Castillo “Juanita” in front of everyone.
Frank: Washburn operated apart from Castillo, running his own little defensive line fiefdom and often either ignoring Castillo or derisively calling him “Juanita” in front of his players, the veteran defensive player said. He was condescending and confrontational and embarrassed Castillo frequently in meetings and at practice and also went over the line criticizing his players at times.
Even after Castillo was fired in October and replaced by Todd Bowles, a respected veteran defensive coach, Washburn continued to be difficult, the defensive player said. And when slumping one-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Babin, who he had coached for years in Tennessee and was very close with, was released last week, Washburn became more disruptive than ever.
Babin was all about compiling sacks, never about winning, never about being part of a team, and it turns out Washburn was exactly the same. No coincidence they were dismissed less than a week apart.
This situation and the news and information that leaks out will only get uglier.
The Eagles are a mess.
