Yes, you read that right. As reported by Yahoo Sports, the New Orleans Hornets plan to change their nickname to the Pelicans, a change that could happen as soon as the 2013-2014 season.  The Pelicans nickname was selected over the other two finalists, Krewe and Brass.

Whereas the name choice may cause some head scratching, the Hornets new owner Tom Benson has always said that he planned to change the franchise name.

Louisiana is the Pelican State, and the bird appears on the state flag and seal.

Bobcats fans, are hoping to regain the rights to the Hornets name which was associated with the successful team of the 90’s that called Charlotte its home.

Bobcats owner, Michael Jordan, has said that he’s open to the idea of changing the name back to the Hornets if it became available.

I actually didn’t believe it when I first read that was the name New Orleans selected, then I laughed out loud.  It will be interesting to see what that logo looks like.  I personally like Brass better.
