Adrian Peterson’s injury, rehab, and return to greatness has been well documented,  Peterson finished the season with 2,096 yards rushing, but was 9 yards short of breaking Eric Dickerson’s single season rushing record of 2,105 yards.

Peterson thought he was further away, and was disappointed when he found out he was so close, but as he told NFL Networks Gameday Morning, he’s aiming higher, and wants to rush for 2,500 next season.

“It was a terrible feeling,” Peterson said. “I kind of figured I didn’t break the record. I kind of assumed maybe I was 30-40 away from it.

“When I heard nine, my heart just sunk into my stomach. (There were) five, six, seven plays I was impatient or made the wrong read — I could have blew it out the water.”

“I want to try to set the ball higher than that,” Peterson said. “I want to make it the 2,500 club.

“It’s definitely out there. I feel like it’s definitely attainable. … Enjoy this last year because the record’s going down, with ease.”

Peterson is a candidate for comeback player of the year and MVP, both he Peyton Manning will be at the top of the list for  the honors.

“It would mean a lot to win the MVP,” Peterson said. “I want to win it and I think I’ve worked hard enough, but it’s not going to define me.

“Inside, I’m my own MVP.”

Peterson would have to rush for about 156 yards per game to achieve that feat.  What do you guys think, can he do it?
