Boger is only the second African American to be the referee for the Superbowl. Mike Carey was the first in 2007 when the Giants defeated the Patriots in Superbowl XLII. This season Boger is most known as the guy Cam Newton bumped and subsequently got a penalty and a $21,000 fine. Although we try not make things about race it is quite the honor to be officiating one of the biggest events of the year in sports, and to be the head guy as an African American rarely has happened so far in NFL.
