SI.com has reported the latest in regards to the Josh Smith trade talks saga. Now, all reports indicate that the Hawks will pursue shopping Smith, as they will not give into his contract demands.
The Hawks will not give Smith the 5-year max deal he’s seeking and will shop him before the February 21st trade deadline. The Hawks are entertaining the idea of trading him by taking offers for the 27-year old 9 veteran, but hasn’t made anything official.
The Hawks have previously said that they will not engage in contract talks in season, but as the race for Smith’s services increases and the chances of them signing him to his specified terms wanes, making a trade now seems to be weighing on their mind.
Currently the Hawks sit in mediocrity in the Eastern conference, at just 26-21 in the 6th seed with some injuries to key players. So is it best to cut ties with Smith now to gain some draft picks, or do they risk the off season and what it may bring. There’s no doubt that the Hawks have moved into total rebuilding mode, so losing Josh Smith would just solidify the fact.
