The 49ers released kicker David Akers today.
General Manager Trent Baalke had this to say about Akers in a press release:
“The 49ers would like to thank David for his service, dedication and leadership over the past two years,”
“He is a true professional who represented himself and this organization with class. We wish him, and his family, all the best.”
The release comes after two tumultuous seasons filled with record-breaking highs and shocking lows. Akers kicked for the 49ers in all of their games in the two seasons he was in San Fransisco. He made 73 of 94 field goals and all 78 extra points
Akers was due a $3 million base salary next season. The 12 year veteran’s agent said he has no plans to retire.
