The Florida Gulf Coast basketball team and their model toting coach Andy Enfield are America’s Darlings thanks to their wildly entertaining and historic NCAA tournament run.
Off the court FGCU players exude the confidence of any top hoops program in the country, and back it up on the court where they are clicking on all cylinders.
The Eagles have already made mincemeat of Georgetown and San Diego State University, and are looking forward to meeting in state challenger Florida in Arlington. Are they afraid? No. According to senior leader Sherwood Brown, they’d even suit up against the Miami Heat.
“I mean, we’re not afraid to go against anybody. We’ll play anyone,” the Eagles’ Sherwood Brown, the Atlantic Sun Conference player of the year, said Monday. “If we had to suit up against the Heat, we would suit up against the Heat. That’s an NBA team right there, so I don’t want to say something I shouldn’t say. But we would try our hardest.”
Earlier in the day, Eagles coach Andy Enfield jokingly told USA TODAY Sports that he wouldn’t be shocked if his senior guard “texts LeBron James and says, ‘Meet us over in Fort Myers — we’ll end your winning streak right now.’ “
I like the FGCU Eagles. I love the fast paced, high-flying show they put on. I love the confidence they show off the court and the fun they have on the court. We know they would get the brakes beat off of them if they played the Heat, but that “never scared” attitude has helped them make their historic run and won’t hurt as they face a tough Florida program this weekend.
