South Carolina star defensive end may enter the 2013 regular season as the Heisman Trophy front-runner.  Clowney would like to be the first defensive player since Charles Woodson to win the prestigious award, but as he told the Greenville News, he has no interest in playing on the offensive side of the ball.

“Nah,” he said. “I have no interest at all in playing offense. Forget it.”

Clowney told the paper he has some idea of what type of season it will take for a strictly defensive player to win the award.

“A guy needs to lead the SEC in forced fumbles, sacks and tackles for loss,” he said. “Just make a lot of key plays in big games. I think that will give some leeway on who wins. We’ll see.”

“It’s strange, but that’s what the people like, touchdowns and more touchdowns,” Clowney said Tuesday. “They don’t worry about the sacks and stuff.”

If Clowney can duplicate the numbers he had last season, with a couple more big SEC wins, Clowney will definitely be in New York with a chance to win the Heisman.
