Miguel Tejada

Miguel Tejada’s performance at the World Baseball Classic, may have prolonged his Major League career after it seemed to be dead and buried.

According to Yahoo Sports, the former Baltimore Orioles shortstop, has managed to secure a spot on the roster of the Kansas City Royals after spending all of last season in the minors.

Former AL MVP Miguel Tejada has made the Kansas City Royals’ opening-day roster as a utility infielder.

Manager Ned Yost made the announcement Friday before the Royals’ exhibition game against Cleveland.

The 39-year-old is a six-time All-Star who last played in the major leagues in 2011 with the San Francisco Giants. He hit .239 with four homers and 26 RBIs in 322 at-bats.

Tejada began Friday with a .353 average and three RBIs in 34 spring training at-bats. He will get a $1.1 million, one-year contract when he is put on the 40-man roster. He will have the chance to earn $200,000 in performance bonuses: $40,000 each for 55, 65, 75, 85 and 95 games.

Tejada, spent last season with the Orioles Triple-A team at Norfolk, but had underwhelming numbers and was released in June. However, at the WBC earlier this month, while playing for the eventual champions Dominican Republic, his bat displayed some of the electricity that made him one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball at one time.
