Julio Cesar Chavez Jr Wants Andre Ward Fight, Not Martinez Rematch
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was dominated in his last bout against Sergio Martinez, but he by all accounts he isn’t interested in an image restoring rematch.
Chavez Jr had this to say about his future plans:
“Martinez has placed too many conditions, has said many things, as always he is a bit talkative and lacks humility. There are great middleweight champions, like Golovkin. I can also fight with Andre Ward. These fights are much more interesting and I think they would present a better show for the people.”
Chavez, whom has failed a drug test before, may be dodging Martinez request for stricter drug testing or he may just be looking for a fighter to stand toe-to-toe with him and trade punches.
Chavez’s next match is scheduled to be against either Darren Baker or Brian Vera in June, which would give Ward enough time to heal completely from shoulder surgery.
The middle weight division has many talented fighters and an exciting match-up isn’t hard for Chavez Jr to find, but his performance should be his primarily concern. HE wasn’t sharp until the final round of the Martinez fight and he must show that he deserves to be a marquee draw in that stacked weight class.
