Mavericks guard O.J. Mayo statistically had the most productive season of his career, so you would assume he’s happy. ¬†According to ESPN L.A., Mayo will thank the Mavs by declining the player option for a second season in Dallas, and becoming a free agent.

Mayo could have made $4.2 million in Dallas next season, but will take his chances trying to secure a long term deal.

“Getting something long term, locking something in is what I think is best for me,” Mayo said Thursday after his exit interview with coach Rick Carlisle and president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson.

The 25-year-old Mayo averaged 15.3 points, 4.4 assists and 3.5 rebounds while playing a team-high 35.5 minutes per game. His game drastically changed once Dirk Nowitzki returned from injury.

Mayo was disappointed in the free agent market last summer, but by opting out, he obviously thinks he can garner some attention and a nice contract.
