The marriage between the Philadelphia 76ers and its head coach and city legend, Doug Collins appears to be headed towards an awkward divorce.

Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Bob Ford is reporting from various league sources that 76ers brass would prefer Collins not return for the 2013-2014 season, and they would prefer he simply quits or retires so they don’t have to pay him.

Collins has one season and $4.5 million left on his contract, and is likely to just walk away and forfeit that money.  This Sixers would prefer that resolution so they don’t have to pay him, but either way he’s good as gone.

“I think he’s gone at the end of the year. He’ll be moving on,” said one NBA source with intimate knowledge of the situation. “He’ll decide to leave, and they won’t be upset about it. They would like to see it work out that he decides to move on.”

It’s a sticky situation for the 76ers who can’t afford the backlash of treating a former player and Philadelphia icon badly when it seems that he’s the only one who has tried to do anything right this season.

“They really want to avoid a backlash if the fans sided with Doug,” the first NBA source said. “They will be happy if Doug makes the call and it works out that he leaves.”
