Brittney Griner Says Baylor Thought Her Being Gay Would Hurt Recruiting

Brittney Griner

People aren’t idiots. You didn’t have to an expert of sexual orientation to see that Brittney Griner was a lesbian and it isn’t a secret that a lot of female basketball players are lesbians, but according to Griner, Baylor did not want her to speak on it.

“It was a recruiting thing,” said Griner, the recent top overall WNBA draft pick, now a member of the Phoenix Mercury. “The coaches thought that if it seemed like they condoned it, people wouldn’t let their kids come play for Baylor.”

“It was more of a unwritten law (not to discuss it). … it was just kind of, like, one of those things, you know. Just don’t do it,” Griner said of speaking publicly about her sexuality. “They kind of tried to make it, like, ‘Why put your business out on the street like that?'”

My thoughts are if a kid didn’t want to go to Baylor because they had gay players, that is a player Baylor shouldn’t have wanted. ¬†Obviously, some things were more important to Baylor.

  • Baylor women’s basketball was nothing until Griner got there. She made that school millions. Besides a free education, what did Brittany get out of it? Dr. Boyce Watkins was right, “The wealth extraction from the black community by the NCAA, easily exceeds one billion dollars a year”
Baylor University shouldn’t have told Brittany what to do about her sexuality, Baylor should be on their knees thanking her that she chose to go to their university.

    • Not true, Baylor was a top 5 women program before Griner got on campus and Baylor is a Baptist college who has a study code of conduct handbook. She wasnt oppressed because of her sexuality and no one exploited her, she got exposure and a college degree that will be worth millions to her.

      • “student code of conduct”

  • I know this has nothing to do with anything but is it me are did she become almost attractive after getting signed.I never thought she was gay by choice. Its hard finding a man that can hold you are even wonts you when your 7 foot tall.

    • That’s some pretty backwater, hodunk commenting there, and you’re right, it had nothing to do with the conversation at hand. Surprisingly, there are all men out there that like–gasp–tall women, and you sound like an ass stating that it’d be hard to find a man that “wonts” her. SMGDH…
