People aren’t idiots. You didn’t have to an expert of sexual orientation to see that Brittney Griner was a lesbian and it isn’t a secret that a lot of female basketball players are lesbians, but according to Griner, Baylor did not want her to speak on it.
“It was a recruiting thing,” said Griner, the recent top overall WNBA draft pick, now a member of the Phoenix Mercury. “The coaches thought that if it seemed like they condoned it, people wouldn’t let their kids come play for Baylor.”
“It was more of a unwritten law (not to discuss it). … it was just kind of, like, one of those things, you know. Just don’t do it,” Griner said of speaking publicly about her sexuality. “They kind of tried to make it, like, ‘Why put your business out on the street like that?'”
My thoughts are if a kid didn’t want to go to Baylor because they had gay players, that is a player Baylor shouldn’t have wanted. Obviously, some things were more important to Baylor.
