Former Green Bay Packers safety Leroy Butler was supposed to give a speech at a Wisconsin church this week. That speech has now been canceled after Butler tweeted out support to gay NBA player Jason Collins via Twitter.

Tuesday, Butler tweeted, “Congrats to Jason Collins.” Soon after that the church informed Butler that his services were no longer needed.

“Wow, I was scheduled to speak at a church in WI, and a member said that the pastor wants to cancel my event. I said ok why? Then I was told, because I said congrats to Jason Collins on Twitter,” Butler wrote. “I said really? we have a contract, he said check the moral cause, FYI the fee was $8,500, then I was told if I removed the tweet, and apologize and ask god forgiveness, I can have the event. I said no, only god can judge.”

The audacity of the church though, going out of their way to try to make Butler apologize, recant his support, and ask for forgiveness.

  1. First of all I take issue with the writer of this article for the statement “The audacity of the church though, going out of their way to try to make Butler apologize, recant his support, and ask for forgiveness.” Last time I checked it was the job of the preacher to cry aloud and spare not, so who are you to tell the church what to do. I applaud the church for standing on truth and upholding the moral standard, we need more churches who have the courage of their convictions and are not scared to stand for what is right.
