When Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced back in February that he was not returning as head coach of Team USA , speculation immediately turned to who might be the legendary coach’s successor. Names like Gregg Popovich and Doc Rivers immediately surfaced as potential candidates as it looked like the days of Coach K’s 62-1 run as the teams head coach had officially ended.
Apparently though, some time to think about it may have swayed Coach K to consider giving the team one more run as head coach for the 2016 Olympics.
Per Sports Illustrated, Coach K was asked whether or not there was a chance he could be back in 2016.
“There’s a chance,” Krzyzewski said. “That’s correct.”
USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo also shared his thoughts on the situation.
“I think it’s very close to being resolved,” Colangelo said. “That’s all I can say for sure.”
He added: “Give it another week and it should be resolved.”
“I would never do that,” Colangelo said about talking to other candidates. “I’ve said that from the beginning, for what he’s invested in USA Basketball, he’s entitled to make his decision before anyone.”
If Krzyzewski turns down the opportunity, Colangelo said he’s “more than prepared to move forward.”
Ultimately we’ll have to wait and see whether or not Coach K decides to give it one more run for the 2016 Olympics. Having only lost once since being the team’s head coach, I think the players would be more than pleased to see him return.
